I have been reading the similar post . Am I correct in uderstanding that pro is not needed if one is not planning on building aircraft , creating scenery , painting , etc ?   I am assuming that add-on planes made with GMAX are not affected by not having the program in the sim ?   I have Pro , but am just trying to advise a beginner friend on which to purchase . FS2002 Pro seems to be a little hard to find at a reasonable price .  Also concernd that buying a used version might be registered to the previous owner

I'd buy the Pro and the extra few bucks be damned. It has happened to me many times in my life that I thought it was wise to buy the "lower-priced spread." Later on it came to pass that I turned around and had to spend more money to get what I needed because the purchase just didn't do the job. So in a sense, I ended up buying the cheaper thing twice. Now, if I am faced with a choice between Brand X and the better one, I choose the better and never look back.

And who knows, your friend may find that he is a gifted gmax designer and can then design airplanes for me (for a fee, of course) and for others here.

Love that name and made me thirsty !!  I know exactly what you are saying , but availability is an issue now .  Just wondered if Pro was actually " needed " for the average user .

"Pro" is not needed for the average user.

It did include some additional gauges, and variants, so if by chance you download an FS2002 model that calls for those gauges, they'll be missing.

My username came from the very first file folder I ever created on the old Leading Edge Model D I had as a sophomore in college, way back in 1985. The file folders were limited to eight characters; file names within the folders were limited to 30 characters. The word-processor software I was using wanted a filefolder name; I was drinking a rootbeer at the time and there it was... I've used that name for things like this ever since.

Thanks for your input and thanks for explaining your great name Rootbeer . I thought the standard version would be fine , but Glenn just e-mailed and was able to get the Pro version on eBay .  I had sent him screenshots from my sim and he was so impressed .  I am glad he is finally getting interested in the simulator world and  he was shocked to see what Milton Shupe and others have done with add on planes . Glenn had a flight service in the Middle East and had a Twin Beech and loved the D-18 by Milton and others ( as do I ) .

Glenn is in the process of making a documentary for TV of his flying days and should be fantastic . For those who recall the old movie " Jet Pilot " with John Wayne and Janet Leigh , Glenn was the " Russian " pilot .
