Well, for a pressie from Mum and Dad I got the Wales And South West VFR stuff.. I know Im a bit below the requirments but I loaded on the central bit... I go flying, and sure, it takes enough time to load for me to do the dishes, take a pee and mow the lawn... but I think thats my specs. They want a PIII 700, Im 500... But when I fly, all maxed out getting around 11-15fps it looks like this:

That is much worse than it claims on the box!! Its in the scenery libraray and everything... my question is:

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG!!?? Or should it be like that?
Help please.... Dan  :(

Hi Dan - Merry Christmas!

In the depths of the manual, it tells you the program settings that you need to make sure are active (I've got the south of England set). If yo look under options-settings-display, there's a checkbox for extended terrain textures - make sure that there's a cross in there. Your terrain should now be extended! Lie this:

Hope it works!

Ok smurf man... fair play, but the box did have an 'X' in it... So i went in search of vindication. After my return from dads wine cellar, I found that it was the mip map thingy making it go all blurry... So I can actually see local town's roads now. But I still have some problems.

1. Its kinda grainy? Should it be like that? Making the screenie a .jpg didn't make any difference ot the quality!! I have adjusted everything i can find. I geuss its my card...  :( Im running 800*600*32, the highest I can get to actually FIT my 17inch screen... And in the distance it goes a bit wierd and jumbled (See screenie). Is that because of my cards incompetence / inability to anti aliase?

2. The sea looks like a b***dy TV  screen with no signal!! Is that normal or do I have to turn Water effects of completely?

3. When I flew out of town towards my house, keeping a constant 1700 AGL i was following a road.. and It all went out of focus... Does the pixels per meter change in rural areas?

Thanks guys,
Dan  ;D

Hi Dan..!
I've got Wales and the West, and the Midlands and the South of England.
Anything below 2000 ft. AGL is pretty naff...the textures are blurry and there is little or no elevation to the ground...it's FLAT...no trees, no buildings, etc...!
Decrease the texture detail distance to speed up the display (similar to FS 2002)...

Cheers Dan....
Have fun above 2000 ft. AGL...!
Imagine you are looking at an Ordinance Survey map, placed on the lawn, from the bedroom window...LOL...!

Paul.

P.S. I've actually un-installed them now, they are only really useful for following roads and motorways around the country from a great height...!

Hi Dan
Merry Christmas
The VFR scenery has quite a hit on frame rates, to quote this months PC PILOT
" As many users have found, to their dissapointment, photographic scenery is extemly resource-heavy and can slow what passes for a modest system to a crawl"
This will explain the low fps, apart frm that is it any good? I have been toying with the idea of getting it for myself. Regards Chris

I strongly suspect that PC Pilot make it all up in the pub...
The VFR textures will make no difference to frame rates and can actually show an improvement.  Lack of RAM will be a problem though.  It will keep pausing and blurring.  A slow hard drive won't help either.

Worst thing you can do to it though is use FS9.  ;-)

Sorry Dan, it is as you say in your root message;  Your system is just a little below the requirements.  :-(

Upping the RAM will help a little but my processor is four times faster than yours and I get similar problems if I fly something fast.  So I stick to er, slow things (and fast things very high).

Best results are around 4000-8000 feet AGL too.

I get that all the time. It's when you go faster than the sim can make the earth. Basically go slower. ;D
