when you say you deleted windows I hope you meant you uninstalled it.
what I would try is to start from scratch put back windows 2000 then run the xp update and install on top of 2000 be sure you follow the instructions that came with the update cd for XP.
I would first uninstall XP then delete any left over folders.
Then restart system then follow the instructions that should have come with the update cd.
If you bought a full blown install version of xp you should find instructions in it as well as to the order in which you need to proceed. Be prepared to reinstall any software as there are different drivers between the two window system even though xp is based on 2000 there could be some driver differances.
