System upgrade

Postby Roberto » Thu Mar 11, 2004 3:38 am

I'd like some comments regarding PC performance. I have the following:

Processor: 1,2GB
RAM (DDR): 448Mb (64+125+256)
Graphics card: G-FORCE 2 MX

I'm considering buying a new Graphics card (since I can get that cheap right now). Whould that help me with framerate, or are the other things also too low.

My framerate is OK (maybe low). I'd just like to fire up performance a little. I know that there's a lot of fanatics out there who will say NEW MACHINE and anything lower than the current max (5GB processor, 10GB memory and so on) is too low. I don't need any of that.

I'd reccomend 512mb of ram and a good graphics card like the FX-5200. By the way, processor speed is measured in MHz and GHz not GB.

AMD Athlon 64 3700+
GeForce FX5200 256Mb
1GB DDR400 DC
Seagate 500Gb SATA-300 HDD
Windows XP Professional X64 Edition

That's right, I'm now using an AMD! I decided to give them another try and they

If you are using too much AI the processor of 1.2 MHz is a problem (small but existing). I have a Celeron 1.7 and have problems when AI is very load. If you use only the default AI though the 1.2 is fine.

Change your graphics card for sure, the GeForce2-MX is a joke. I would suggest to check the FX-5700 as well and decide if you want to spend some more money or you prefer to vuy the FX-5200. In any case your framerate will dramatically increase.

Also, 512 MB RAM will also do some change but not that big from 448. On the other side 64MB RAM is very cheap so it worths to upgrade.

And there is something else regarding your settings. From the display options choose a framerate value (actually this is the aiming/maximum framerate) to be between 16-20 as these are the ideal frequencies for the human eye. If you set something lower you will start experiencing the effect of "jumping screen". On the other hand if you set something higher you will have your similation giving you more frames per second without realising any difference (but your PC will do deteriorating the graphics)

Highly recommend the GeForce FX 5200 card. I have one on a 98SE p2 450Mhz machine with 256mb 100Mhz bus mem, and it runs fs2002 at 28fps in the congested areas, up to 40 or more fps in less congested areas. It amazes me when folks with 1Ghz or higher machines report performance problems.

Maybe unload some programs that start up on boot, might help relieve some resources.

I would highly recommend the FX5200 as well, the 128MB card has been very reliable for me. WOrking in my old system as well as the new...(Backwards AGP compatible...:-))

Prices have also come down extremely quick on all video cards, so now would definately be a good time (Market-wise...)
