Can you find the *.dll on the CD? Like you, I am new to FS2002, but it might work. When you un-installed, did you MANUALY remove the folder structure?

In all M$ sims a normal reinstall, that's Uninstall/Install to the same directory, restores all default files. If for some reason this does not fix the problem a full Uninstall, removing all traces of the previous install after uninstall is complete should do the trick. This will be like installing the sim for the first time & you will lose all your addons unless you previously backed them up.
You should always uninstall programs like the sims from the Uninstall option on the CD or Add/Remove Programs. (These in fact do exactly the same thing.) Never delete the main directory folder before doing this.
I hope this is some help.

I would hazard a guess that you have recently installed a windows update. I had the same problem following the update and had to system restore back to before it.

I just ran a search of my HD. I have 2 files named traffic.dll.
One is in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FS2002\MODULES
The other is in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Modules
This seems logical as I have both FS2002 & FS2004 (FS9) installed.
If you do a full uninstall as I suggested I can see no possible reason why it would not work. Make sure you remove the traffic.dll from your Windows/system32 folder & also delete the FS2002 main directory folder after Uninstall is complete & before attempting to Install it again.
PS. This shouldn't be necessary but it wouldn't hurt to reboot your PC before re-inserting the CD to start the install process. Also shut down any anti-virus software before doing so.
PPS. If you're using WinXP take Will's advice.

I have the identical problem that you have. Mine started recently when I installed FSUIPC. I have not been able to use System Restore as it does not work. I have thoroughly cleaned out the FS2002 directory and reinstalled it twice. At the conclusion of installation the programme runs ok. When I close it it will not open again, showing the error message about traffic.dll. It is not possible to remove all the files of traffic.dll as it is impossible to delete or rename the traffic.dll file in windows>system32. I am so fed up that I am on the point of formatting the hard disc and starting again from scratch. A knowledgeable friend of mine thinks the problem lies in the registry but going in there is a bit beyond me. I wish us both the best of luck.

Most third party software and a few other files won't delete in an un-install. If you un-install, use windows explorer to go to c:program files/microsoft games/fs2002 and delete thefolder after you're un-install. You may also want to try scan-reg/system restore. I can't testify to the traffic.dll in system 32 but it may be helpful to dump that as well.
good luck

Hi Smoke,
Can you remember the number or the details of the update that caused you a problem.

Have you tried System Restore to go back to a date when FS2002 worked last. I do not have this option as my system restore doesn't work. Oh how I wish it did!

I can only suppose you're using WinXP. I have FS2002 & FS2004 installed on WinMe & both run perfectly. There is no file named traffic.dll in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32. I have no idea why it would be any different on WinXP but this is the only explanation I can think of.
Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of XP & therefore can't suggest a way to fix it.
PS. Check this out.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824427Apparently Method 2 worked for others.
Method 2: Copy the Flight.dll File
To copy the Traffic.dll file from the Modules folder to the root folder of Flight Simulator 2002, follow these steps:
Quit Flight Simulator 2002 if it is running.
Click Start, point to Run, and then type the following line where drive is the letter of the hard disk where Flight Simulator 2002 is installed:
drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FS2002\
Double-click the Modules folder.
Right-click the Traffic.dll file, and then click Copy.
On your toolbar, click the Back button.
On the Edit menu, click Paste.
Close all the windows and test the game.

Please be assured that in windowsxp at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 there is a file named traffic.dll. It is impossible to delete, change name or get rid of it any other way. The strange thing is that there are two files with the same name!!! but the file in the FS2002 Module folder is 70kb and in the SYSTEM32 is 30kb. I find this very strange. Can someone explain this to me please.

Alan. Did you spot my PS? Please try Method 2 as I'm told it will work.
Basically: Copy the traffic.dll in FS2002\Modules & paste it into the FS2002 main directory folder.

OK. Let's try to clear this up once & for all. The fact that I have no knowledge of WinXP is a handicap but I am used to troubleshooting this sort of problem. In order to do this I obviously need some feedback.
