Hi Burna,

Reverse thrust is not designed to back the a/c up, nor will it. It provides auxillary slowing when landing.

To back the plane, use 'push-back'. Hit [shift+p] to start backing and the same to stop backing. To turn while backing hit 1 or 2(keyboard, not numpad) right after [shift+p]. 1 turns left, 2 turns right after 1 plane length.

Cheers,
dave

I'm afraid you're wrong. Basically every aircraft equipped with thrust reversers have the ability to go backwards, although it's very unsafe for aircrafts with wing mounted engines to perform that kind of operation (risk of FOD). But the DC9's, MD8X series can do this without problems at all, ATR and SAAB props comes to mind as well.

Hi Nexus82,

Sorry if I was in error but was speaking from a Sim point of view, not real world, of which I am fairly uninformed. But have learned something new today, means the day was a success. Thanks :)

FOD??............'Flop on Deck'? :P

Cheers,
dave

Ahh, yes in the sim that is impossible, unfortuneately.
:)
FOD means Foreign Object Damage, and that could be rocks gravel etc, things that are NOT supposed to be in an aircraft engine.

MY friend told me that when there was a government coup in Sri Lanka, the airlines didn't have the time to wait for push-back vehicles, so the A330/340's used their reverses to push back from the gate!

Hmmmmmmmm.....

Strange that Microsoft didn't put that in the game coz if i remember correctly, in FS98 you could back up the learjet and 767  with Reverse Thrust. ???

Thanks for the info guys.

I am pretty sure that I have backed a big jet before in FS2002 by using the reversers.

it's just a matter of fuel load.

Hello,
check the .air file for the fields with the word Reverse in them.
You can toggle reverse on or aff and set the relative power or thrust to the forward value. Use AirEd etc to edit it.

Yes it is true that a real jet can back up with RT. It is only safe in rear mounted jet engines though.

And HGI (hot gas ingestion) is always a risk.

Especially when standing near Ozzy after one of his really potent goulashes ;D

It's just a matter of having enough thrust and an airplane that's light enough.  Static friction in this game seems to be too high--there seems to be too much initial resistance to get something moving from a standstill.  In other words, when an aircraft is stopped on pavement, it requires more throttle than in real life to get moving.  At least that's what it seems like to me.

So it follows that an aircraft that can back up in real life because of thrust reversers or reverse pitch props cannot in FS2002.

Yep, I've also backed planes up using reverse thrusters...of course this was in the early days before I knew about the pushback feature...

Also keep in mind that not all planes are reverse thruster equipped, so that makes it difficult.

And believe it or not, we've all made this mistake once in our virtual careers...make sure the brakes are off. ;)
