Sure, just tune a NAV radio to an ATC frequency. Opening the ATC window just tunes it automatically.

thanks-
now i have a different question
is there a way to separate the ground, tower and air traffic so when you are on the ground that is all you hear, when you are in the air and on approach hear the air traffic and the tower telling you what to do. The way it is now seems overly cluttered on the head sets

That's all you should be hearing. That's why there are different freq's. Unless I'm misreading your question.

You can either manually tune the different frequencies or let the ATC window do it for you for NAV 1. If you also have an active frequency (like ATIS) tuned into NAV 2 you will hear 2 radios at the same time.

.....
if the ATC you tuned in to has different frequencies for approach, tower and ground etc. In the sim ATC at smaller airport often does not have that so you'll hear everybody at the same frequency. You can check the frequencies for any airport with AFCAD. If it has only got "traffic" all communication will be on the same frequency. With AFCAD you can easily create frequencies for all the other functions (arrival, departure, ground, clearance and so on).
By the way, if it's to busy you could also lower the amount of AI traffic in the settings/ATC menu.
Hope this helps.

thanks- I was trying to figure out how to change the smaller airports with only one frequency-
I am new to AFCAD, how do you make the different frequencies?

AFCAD is a freeware program that allows you to modify a lot of unvisible stuff at an airport, such as parking spaces, taxiways, radiofrequencies etc. It does not modify anything visible in the sim. In my opinion it is one of the most useful utilities to modify your FS. There's good AFCAD tutorials on the web and I think the manual that comes with the program is easy to understand so you'll have little problems if you want to give it a try.
Assuming you have AFCAD installed and know a little bit how it works:
Open the airport you want to modify. Open the menu "lists", select "comm frequencies". You'll get a list of the frequencies (hardly surprising...) and the option "insert". Now you can insert whatever type of communication you want. Try to assign frequencies that are not in use at nearby airports or you'll hear communication from other traffic as well. After you're done, save the airport and that's it.
One note: an airport must have at least a "tower frequency" and parking spaces (plus taxiways to and from them) for AI traffic to use the airport.
Please let us/me know if this is useful information for you. I'll be glad to help you out if there's more questions!
Good luck
AJ
