jargon/abbreviations and approach loops

Please consider two questions from a new simmer.
1.  Is there a really good dictionary of terminology, abbreviations, and acronyms relating to the art of flying. ......ie. instruments, charts, and other cockpit necessary sciences short of engine mechanics ( God help the new simmer with a short memory)...Most of the glossaries, being few, fall frustratingly short  of the ideal.
2. what's with the landing hoops (sort of like VASI approach ?) as shown in the Rod Machado's ground school (fs2002) video landing tutotials?...its great!...Is it a for-real type landing system?...If so please clue me in to find out about it......Thanks for any help you can give me

The hoops are a teaching aid. I think in some new avionics they can visualized on the artificial horizon in real life. I think you can use them anytime you are tracking a VOR radial or ILS landing. I think it's called EFIS (electronic flight instrument system).

Thanks to Heber98 (the 2nd time that you have come to my rescue)...about the EFIS.....er.......um....is this something that is found in a typically small aircraft like a Cessna 182 S (say)....(or something larger)..or is it part of a larger airport approach system?......and how would I gain access to it (given, as you say, that it is a part of the ILS)..................Please point my nose in the right direction to learn more about it....thanks again...oopysnu

In real life they're referred to as "highway in the sky" and are only available with very expensive modern avionics packages. The visualization is not created out the windshield, instead it appears on the NAV display on the panel. There is nothing out there that creates exactly what you see in the sim.

An aircraft with a HUD (G550/BBJ/739) WILL have the EFIS display in front of the pilot similar to what you have illustrated. And of course everything is relative(in regard to what you consider "expensive") but there are now systems available for light aircraft that have EFIS or "highway in the sky" functions. HITS/EFIS/FMS/WAAS/TAWS are all functions available on the Chelton FlightLogic system for around $70,000.

Jeppesen probably makes the best textbook for instrument training. It will cost around $40-$60, but it's well worth the cost. It will answer just about any question you have about terms, procedures, charts etc..
Of course if you have any specific questions, just post them here or in the "flightschool" column. I guarantee you that it will be answered in less than 24hrs.  :)

Thanks again to Heber98 and thanks to OTTOL for your valued wisdom and efforts......This art needs people like you to fill in the many holes left by instruction videos and text books.........oopysnu
