In real life they're referred to as "highway in the sky" and are only available with very expensive modern avionics packages. The visualization is not created out the windshield, instead it appears on the NAV display on the panel. There is nothing out there that creates exactly what you see in the sim.
An aircraft with a HUD (G550/BBJ/739) WILL have the EFIS display in front of the pilot
similar to what you have illustrated. And of course everything is relative(in regard to what you consider "expensive") but there are now systems available for light aircraft that have EFIS or "highway in the sky" functions. HITS/EFIS/FMS/WAAS/TAWS are all functions available on the Chelton FlightLogic system for around $70,000.
Is there a really good dictionary of terminology, abbreviations, and acronyms relating to the art of flying. ......ie. instruments, charts, and other cockpit necessary sciences short of engine mechanics ( God help the new simmer with a short memory)...Most of the glossaries, being few, fall frustratingly short of the ideal.
Jeppesen probably makes the best textbook for instrument training. It will cost around $40-$60, but it's well worth the cost. It will answer just about any question you have about terms, procedures, charts etc..
Of course if you have any specific questions, just post them here or in the "flightschool" column. I guarantee you that it will be answered in less than 24hrs. :)
.....so I loaded up the plane and moved to Middle-EEEE..........OIL..that is......
