Trust me, I understand your frustrations. I spent MONTHS trying to figure out how to do it, gave up more than once, and then thought "Okay fine. I'll read your stupid tutorial."
Turns out, if I'd read it on the first day, I would have been fine. It explains everything perfectly clear. (I printed it out and kept it on my desk the first few times...)
Lemme find where it is on their site and I'll re-post the info.
Hang in there.
PS...online flying isn't mandatory for us, just recommended for the fun of it!

Hrrrmmmm...okay.
It's a longshot, but here's what I think we should do. When I get home from work tonight, I'll try to connect, and I'll do so while in an IM with you...just send me an email with your name, either in MSN or AIM....if you don't have either of those, let me know, and I'll see what else we can do. I might be able to talk you through it manually...

Hmm...Someone here is obviously going to know how to fix this more than me, so rather than confuse you further, I'm going to :-X and let them try to help. It's got to be fixable.
You're not using a router by any chance are you?

sob sob sob sob sob YES
BUT ( again )
before you nod wisely , i have always used this router and everything worked fine previous
it all went wrong when i updated fsuipc and installed fsnav
since then nothing i do works , uninstall , re-install , jump around , poke finger in eye , nothing
huge sigh

i think if i was a horse they`d shoot me
and to cap it all , now with the latest version of fsuipc i get the message about not registerd components or something , just to help matters
what it needs is someone to create a page with the right versions of the right software that will work together and FULL instructions on how what and why

Gilbates man I feel sorry for you. My son's a vegetarian, otherwise I'd shoot you if you think it would help.
I'm no expert online-flying-wise (can't get it started, or can but find it so much trouble trying to understand what's going on that I gave up).
about FSUIPC: I installed the latest one as well, gave me the notes about not registered programs blabla.
Put in in the bin, reinstalled the older version et voila.
Wouldn't be surprised if there is an update/fix coming sooner or later.
Hang in there, don't go kill yourself.
There's people on this earth that care about you you know.
Cheers
AJ

Have you read this from the VATSIM site?
Q # S-8) I can not get Squawkbox to find the Flight Simulator multiplayer session. What's wrong ?
A) This problem is frequently reported. It often occurs after installing a new network protocol (usually a new TCP protocol stack in the windows network properties). This may happen indirectly when installing software to access a new ISP from a DSL or cable modem provider.
The issue occurs because the Squawkbox program is attempting to look out on the network to access the the multiplayer session, when instead it should be looking in memory on the same computer. One method is to try and force Squawkbox to look on the same computer is to enter the fake IP address 127.0.0.1 into the address box.
Also, you may have luck switching the multiplayer session protocol setting. These are the network protocols that have been setup on your computer. Anyone with an internet connection will have TCP, but some people may have Novell's IPX or other protocols running. If you are having trouble, try selecting a different protocol.
Also, check your windows network properties (very carefully) and remove any protocol stacks that are not in use. Especially if you have recently changed or added new network access. If you don't understand what's going on there - don't touch it. You might loose a network connection.
For those who are technically minded - here are some technical details of the multiplayer process:
Flight Simulator uses the Microsoft DirectPlay game protocol, which is part of the DirectX multimedia drivers, to send aircraft info between players.
DirectPlay messages are carried over networks in a lower-level network protocol, such as TCP or IPX.
Squawkbox uses multiplayer in a different fashion than a "normal" MP session, such as one using the Microsoft Game Zone. On the Game Zone, DirectPlay messages are going out over the internet between the players, to tell each PC where each other player's aircraft is.
On VATSIM, the VATSIM server that you are connected to is sending aircraft position info - but not with DirectPlay messages, instead with VATSIM's FSD server protocol. And, the aircraft data does not go directly into Flight Sim, this info goes to the Squawkbox program running on your PC.
Your Squawkbox program then repackages the aircraft info into DirectPlay messages and sends those to your simulator. When everything is configured properly, the messages should not try and go back out on the network, since both Squawkbox and Flight Sim are running on the same machine.

Additionally, several people have had problems with connecting while a router is in the mix....
Send Steve an email and he might be able to help you. If you need his email address, let me know and I'll send it to you in an IM here...
