Kai-Tak

So I read some of the posts about Kai-Tak and its allure and I wanted to fly it and see what it was all about - well, its no where to be found in fs2k2. Then I realized it was closed in real life - so i guess thats why its not in there.

So I tried to figure out why it was closed and what all the hub bub was about. I went to www.airliners.net and was checking out the pictures of the approach to kai-tak, the runway, the harbor, etc and realized why its closed. Nothing like seeing a 747 pull a 45 degree bank to make a turn for the runway 1000 feet AGL then land sideways and come to a stop just before taking a dip - very impressive!

Anyway - I've more or less caught the bug for that airport as well - and can't wait for someone to release an add-on for it.

Looking good but probably a real frame hog. If you like Asian airports, check out the updated Kansai Airport at Avsim. Kansai is a man-made island airport in Osaka Japan. The original FS2002 version looks like crap but the new one is amazing.

Oh and where can I purchase a life?

BDS, Kai Tak wasn't closed because of its difficulty as an airport; simply, it had become too small for the traffic through Hong Kong.  With only one runway, it could no longer cope with the demand for more and more flights in and out of the colony (as it was then).  So Chek Lap Kok was born on reclaimed land (and is sinking, actually) but at least you can still fly Kai Tak in flightsim!

You'll find more info at my site together with existing renditions of Kai Tak for flightsim.  We're all looking forward to Roger's effort, though.

Not to put any pressure on you, RollerBall, heh heh ...

Hi Mark,

Recognise the old place? I'm still trying to keep things as accurate as I can within the limits that are possible.

Bl**dy hell I wish I'd had the chance to go before they put the bulldozers in. A pal of mine, no interest in flying or simming at all, said the other day oh yeah, he flew in quite a few times BUT HE PREFERS THE NEW AIRPORT.

Oh NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo...............

:(

Roger

Firstly, sorry about the three identical posts, everyone.  Quite often, when I visit here and make a post, I get browser error messages ... but I can now see that all was well behind them.  Ah so.

Secondly, Roger, your friend probably finds life a lot easier using the new airport ... all jolly efficient, quick links into town etc., whereas getting a taxi at all out of Kai Tak could be a nightmare ... but we're talking chalk and cheese.  Chek Lap Kok is like any other world airport ... Kai Tak was quite unique.

Thirdly, "recognise the old place?".  Well, not from your screenie of the OUTSIDE of the Aero Club, for sure; I was always IN it, consuming far too much alcohol.  But I'm sure you will have done a sterling job when your next effort hits the servers; if you would like me to cast an eye before any official upload, you only have to say.

Ciao for niao.

Mark

Errrr....

Still working on it. I mentioned in a recent post that I've had a few problems with dynamic objects. I've got ferries moving round the bay great and stopping off at 3 terminals and cruise ships sailing round the island. But I can't get the objects on the airport right - fuel trucks, food trucks etc.

The ones I'm using are all 50% too small but as I've wasted a lot of time (and not been working on buildings and things in the meantime) they'll have to do until I can update them later.

In the last few days I've been re-doing the AFCAD file and I've now got one that includes the Flying Club. All the small GA stuff (Cherokees, Barons, RGs, 172s) now start and finish there removing them from the main apron. I love it and in all my tests so far it works great.

My new AFCAD file now has all the stands that were there in real life and all the original taxiways with correct designations for ATC.

Nearly done the main buildings on the airport itself although I've still got a bit to do on the main and cargo terminals. Plus I've still got to do the Good Harvest and MSI cargo buildings (in the adjacent road) and the Ferrari garage plus the gas holders over near the Kowloon ferry terminal so I'm afraid I was a bit optimistic a few weeks ago.

I love flying it and seeing all the features but I'm afraid I have to get it to at least the minimum I think is acceptable before I can release it.

Sorry for the delay because I know people have been waiting for a while now.

Roger

Roger we understand (this is something of a project), and lets face it the anticipation is making it all the more worthwhile.
Personally I'd wait another six months if necessary!
