Strange Problem With Sceneries

Postby MattNW » Thu Jun 05, 2003 12:41 am

I had a number of sceneries in Alaska that I downloaded here at Simviation. They all worked perfectly a while ago but now I can't get a single one of them to work. FS2002 will start loading textures and get exactly to the 16% mark and then crash. I've tried reinstalling the sceneries but it still crashes. This is only my Alaska sceneries. Others like Xiaoshan and Cincinatti work fine. I haven't touched any of these for some time and I sure didn't make any changes in the scenery files. I pretty much just ignored them until today and suddenly they don't work.

What gives? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

This is a wild guess but have you downloaded any other sceneries since you last successfully used the Alaska stuff?

If so it could be something in there, although it really shouldn't be! Might be worth disabling them and renaming the folders then try Alaska again.

Otherwise have you replaced any of the generic textures, scenery objects that might now be effecting this. Also, has the season changed since last you were in Alaska (if you are using the real time settings)? This would change the textures used I believe. Might be worth trying different times of year!

I'm new to FS2k2 (more of a cfs2 man) so this is a guess based on my CFS2 knowledge.

Hope you can sort it.

I think kevieb may have hit the bullseye with the seasonal changes. As he correctly assumed, they use a whole bunch of different texture files.

It sounds as though some may be missing or (possibly) in incorrect format. Did the readme that accompanied them mention anything about them being "winter only" or anything like that? I have some scenery textures that only appear in summer.

Your right it was the season change that did it Spring to Summer. Now here's something really strange. I changed the season to Spring and the scenery loaded fine then while in the game at Blizzard run I changed the season back to the present and FS2002 didn't crash yet when I try to start it during Summer it crashes.

The only generic scenery changes I made since the Alaska sceneries was to install the rest of the world packages of autogen buildings by Gerrish Gray but I installed the North America package a long time ago, before the Alaska sceneries along with his trees. I haven't found anything that mentions any specific season and there's no noticeable difference between Spring and Summer inside the scenery that I can detect.

I guess that for now if I want to start a flight in one of those sceneries I'll have to start it in Spring. This old drive is getting full anyway. I really need to dig out the other drive and reload everything on it. A good fresh install tends to help those strange little quirks.
