Can anyone tell me what would cause aircraft to "surge" to and fro when fs is in the spotplane mode?

What do you mean by surging? Is the aircraft dramatically altering flight, or do you mean the way the camera zooms around the plane (sometimes a bit out of control)?

If you pull down the menu bar when in flight and select "views" then "view options", a window will open.

Make sure the "spot plane" radio button is selected then look for a check box at the bottom left of the preview pane called "Gradual transition". Uncheck it and your spot plane view won't "surge".

The setting can't be saved btw unless you save the flight.

WOW! I did this just now to check it out-what a difference! My framerates increased dramaticaly Is that normal?

Disabling gradual transition gives FS2002 (read your processor) that much less work to do. It's a lot simpler to calculate everything from a fixed view than a moving one.

With gradual transition enabled, FS2002 has to not only cope with additional workload of the scenery moving relative to your aircraft (as normal) but also keep an eye on the effect that any movement has on your camera position.

In cases where you're not running a particularly powerful machine, this can manifest itself as a significant improvement, as appears to be the case for you.

Now if I could find where it stores the setting (it needs re-doing every flight unless you save it) I'd be a happy man. I went looking through all the .cfg files again today and couldn't pin down any likely looking entries. It's in there somewhere, but God knows where...
