Various Windows enthusiast sites on the Web have noted the adverse performance impact caused by patch 811493 on their Windows XP Home, Professional and 64-bit systems.

Didn't know there were any Windows enthusiasts..... ;)

I have the XP auto-updates enabled, and had noticed that there'd been a slow-up in frame rate a couple of weeks ago. I had put this down to using real world weather for the first time, and to flying low over complex scenery, but sure enough, I uninstalled the patch mentioned, and the frame rate leapt from 11-12 back to 25-30, where it was before.

I've turned the auto-update feature off now!

THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU ramsa!!! My entire system is back up to speed thanks to you! I couldnt for the life of me figure out what it was that was slowing everything down. I ran a spyware scan, antivirus, defrag, etc etc etc with no significant results. Thought a trojan got passed the ol' firewall. I am a happy boy once again ;D

Thanks for the warning Ramsa, I'm not risking any of the XP fixes at the moment, as all of them seem to slow down the system. I've had to re-install once since getting XP Pro a year ago, and I've had to do loads of fixes.... Maybe I'll do a Fozzer and move down to 98.

That's right Fozzer!

I've got a friend who has a shop here in town, who builds custom systems per customer's specifications.

He absolutely refuses to install XP as a Op system on any machine he builds. Win 98 SE only. I bought a system he built for my youngest son a couple of weeks ago and I'm confident he'll have a PC that will be dependable for a long time.

From one Happy "98er" to another!

Cheers.

Maybe I choose the wrong option when I decided to un-install one of my operating systems from a dual-boot....98 went!

Sorry to be the dissenting voice here, but Win98 will never give you the stability of XP. I've run 98 for a long time and still do in a dual boot system with XP Pro.

I'm not going to waffle too long about this because I see these kind of threads all over the place and nothing anyone says ever makes any difference.

WinXP is like every other windows operating system in one respect:

It has to be setup, updated and configured properly for it to work at it's best. If it isn't, as with any other OS, it won't perform well.

Concluding comment: How many win98 users can say they've never had a P.C. crash/freeze/blue screen of death in 6 months of continous use?

I know a few XP users who can and I've only limited it to 6 months because that's the most I've seen reported. Personally, I've had to re-install a few times, but NOT because of the OS and 6 months is about as long as I've had it installed at any one time. I've had Win XP running FS2002 for over a year in total and I have never, repeat never, had FS2002 crash on me once - or the OS as a whole for that matter.

Nothing wrong with 98 but it simply isn't as stable (if it's set up correctly. ;))

I would have to completely agree here with FsTipster WinXP is without a doubt the most stable and configurable OS.

And seems to be a perfect platform for Fs2k2.
