Backcourse hold & TO/GA

Hi everybody,
I'll be thankful if somebody gives a brief description  of TO/GA (take off/go around mode) and BC (backcourse hold) switchs and also the way to use them.

I'll try and cover the back course for you.

If you're on an approach to a runway with an ILS system at the opposite end (perhaps because of wind direction) you can use Back Course (BC) to guide you in in the same way as the APPR button.

However, there is one fundamental difference between the operation of BC and APPR:

BC can not give you the glideslope so you have to control your own descent.  It's function is limited to lining you up with the ILS.

And I'll take TO/GA.

TO/GA stands for Take Off/Go Around mode, and it's a throttle mode used for take offs (and go arounds). It gives you optimal thrust for taking off, and for going around. All you do is sit at the end of the runway, put on  your parking brakes, switch to autothrottles, and engage TO/GA mode. Then don't let off the parking brakes until your plane is creeping forward, and watch it go!

Are you serious? That is how it is? I learned about Backcourse right now!

OK to make sure i have it right.......

Airport KXXX has ILS runway 36 but wind does not allow me to land because it is going 18, i tune in ILS for runway 36 but i head towars runway 18.....i hit the Backcourse switch and i get aligned perfectly for the runway, all i have to do is descent......

TO/GA........Only seen it in heavies but cool system

Oh but to work the TO/GA i need to turn the AP Autothrottle first right? .....and when should it be shut off? When i reach crusing altitdue?......

and on VATSIM speed limits are a rule, how fast does that take me? right on 250 kts?

That's it exactly assuming that Rwy 18 doesn't have an ILS available. :)

To/GA mode gives you about 95-98%N1 depending on your groundspeed and aircraft type. which can easily get you to 300 kts below 10.000ft
you need autothrottle to switch it on, when you go to speed-hold mode it switches off (but i never use it :) )

Does anybody know of a place which describes all this stuff for us newbies? I have heard that the one book written on FS 2002 is lousy. Where can one learn all the tricks in one reading?

The best place I've found for FS (and real aviation) knowledge is these forums.....!

Yeah, me too. I just wish I could read it all in one book or manual for quick referencing. So many posts, so little time!!!

While I'm taxiing I dial up 250 on the AP speed controller. Once in the climb I hit the IAS button on the AP, which automatically disengages TOGA and engages speed control, and settle in to a 250 knot climb.

Above FL100 I use mach number to set climb and cruise speeds which lets me follow speed control regulations while getting a clean take-off.

If the SID is particularly tight I'll dial up a slower initial climb speed and keep the slats out for a little longer.
