PO'd

I know that there are disclaimers about installing add ons at your own risk, but when one does trash your Sim so bad that you cannot uninstall FS2k2 or get it to to install over the old - it really irks me.

It screwed it up so bad I had to try to reinstall.
Now I cannot get it to install - it fails and gives a message that the virtual memory or swap file is not big enough and will not let it unpack the FS2002.cab file - or maybe the file is corrupt. And nothing else has changed.

They are plenty big and the cd has no scratches or anything.

Now I am going to have to reinstall XP to see if that will work.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry - just venting!

Keeps me from cutting loose and whuppin someone's ass.

Oso, I can think of two solutions.
1) stick a v.large calibre gun in the floppy drive and tell the machine if it doesn't start being more helpful you'll give it a programming it'll never forget :o ;D
2) try setting the machine settings back to what they were (a restore), this fixed a problem for me the other day.

Oso - what 'addon' do you think may have caused this?
I have installed many 1000's over the years & have never had any problems that have required a re-install - this is because the majority of addons are simply read by FS & do not make any changes to the FS engine - & certainly not the Windows OS. When I have had to re-install it has been due to either a conflicting other program or a payware add-on that had changed the FS engine. These tend to be a lot better these days... Manually installed Aircraft, Scenery or Panels should never cause any problem - because FS simply reads these.

This is another reason I always extract even exe files into a Temp folder before install.

There are many utilities you can get that will remove orphan files -

Also - you always need to completely uninstall - using Add/Remove Programs before a re-installing FS. & Reboot before starting a re-install - making sure your anti virus is turned off before you begin the Install - & no other programs running. . . A re-install may be a pain in the rear end but it's no big deal at the end of the day.

Pete - it was the little prog that activates the crash effects. I found it on this site or the Outhouse - cannot remember which. I downloaded it some time back and just now got around to installing it.

I always zip/install to a separate folder as well. But this one did not give the option and after I discovered that - it was too late. It jumped right to install without a prompt, or letting me set the destination.

I boot after every install to identify the culprit if any cause a problem.

When I tried to launch FS2K2 it went to the splash sceen for a few and then would simply go away and return back to desktop.

Then the uninstall would do the same.

As would the install - except it would give the nasty little message mentioned above.

No big deal I guess - I had backed up recently. Just a pain to have to go through it. And to top it off it was only for 10 aircraft, but if you want them all that way, you could send $1.99 to......

Not very likely, I would say.

I cannot name the file for you. I deleted it. And later I dumped the trash in case FS2K2 uses the recycle bin as a swap file like some progs do. Should have written it down so I could warn others - sorry.

Ozzy - funny you should mention the gun trick. The mother board I had before this one had some really serious issues with XP - even though it was set up for it. It became well known for this after it was out for awhile. But who knew when it was just released to the market? I only had it for a few weeks before I made them give me my money back and got another brand.

Anyway at one point it got so exasperating that I threatened it and laid my Military .45 on top of the case - it would work fine whenever the pistol was on top of the case. Like it knew or something. LOL

I don't understand how it trashed your system to begin with.  What was exactly wrong with FS?

Since you have to reinstall  will the computer let you uninstall the first FS.  Then when you go to reinstall you get a virtual memory error?  Have you tried increasing your virtual memory?  Have you deleted the entire FS folder before the reinstall?  Sometimes programs when uninstalled properly will leave files behind and not delete everything.

Yes - I tried all the proper methods first - then the improper ones as a last resort.

The virtual memory and swap file sizes were the same as when first installed FS2k2 - but enlarged them a little anyway and made sure the trash can was dumped etc etc. Even cleaned the CD. To no avail.

There is a corrupted file somewhere - probably one where FS2K2 interfaces with XP somewhere - and it will be easier to reinstall than to hunt hunt it down I reckon.

Best I can figure anyway.

I am no expert by any means.

OK - sorry you've had this trouble. I'll remove the file if anyone else has trouble with it.  At this stage it could be a conflict in your own system.

The file I presume you are referring to is

CrashBak2.zip

at the foot of this page

http://www.simviation.com/fs2002utilities_gen5.htm

I'll try to check this file asap. In the meantime has anyone else installed it?

Thanks.

Pete, I know a few people here have been using it, but I don't know what OS they have. So far the only complaints have been the lack of damage textures (but that is a model issue) making things not as good as they hoped.
I'm running XP, but I haven't tried this.

It's not something I would go for but I'm downloading it now. If it's auto-install forget it. ;)

PS. Sorry, I'm not brave enough to try it. These automatic setup gizmos make me nervous.

I do not expect it to be removed - I am aware it could be a mismatch with my system - just wanted others to be careful.

I looked at the one you pointed to and that is not the one. I think the name was crash3 or something like that.

Anyway - thanks for the concern and help all.

I was just venting when I started this. I know the consequences of fooling around with freeware. But that still doesn't stop one from doing a little old fashioned swearing.  ;)

I installed it to see if it did anything worthwhile (XP Pro) and didn't have a problem.

Oso - I have a registry cleaner for XP. If you need it mail me and I'll send it. Wiping the registry clean of FS2002 (and crashbak2) entries might sort the problem out.

I'm glad i'm not the only one! I ALWAYS like to know what's being placed itno my FS2002 directories. Sometimes programs won't give you a choice for the installation path, i'll 'hide' the flightsim directory letting me install the program in an empty default directory. Works most of the time ;)

You beat me to it but that's what I was going to suggest. Registry entries are often the problem when a corrupted program doesn't uninstall cleanly then refuses to reinstall. Uninstallers are notorious for not cleaning all the junk out of the registry. He might also try reinstalling DirectX just to be safe.

I've been using cashbak2 without a problem under WinXP and FS2002 pro.
