Scenery problems

Postby Bruce Stuckey » Thu May 15, 2003 8:46 am

F2002 - When I load up, the ground graphics are sharp and perfect. Good fast frame rates and high detail. But as I fly, the scenery appears to drop in detail. Some areas are almost smooth with no detail at as I change areas. How do I set it to refresh the graphics so they stay with high detail ?
System is fast 1.4G, with AGP card.

Bruce, as you fly higher the scenery will go out of focus.
However if you want to experiment with the settings menu and then display and on the left you'll see some toolbars, the more you drag their settings to the right the higher the settings.

Good luck

Thankyou, but I probably didn'texplain myself enough.. You see all the scenery sliders are maxed out. No problems with frame rates, but at a set altitude (low) as you fly along, the scenery does not come up in the same detail. Large square patches remain in low detail even when your over them. It's as if the system is not picking up the scenery in high res' as it approaches.
Does that make my problem any clearer ?
Can anyone suggest whats going on ?

Bruce. You don't mention your system specs or OS but I have a pet theory that this is a virtual memory problem. It takes a fair bit of memory to run the sim so there's not much left to refresh scenery. How much RAM do you have? Similar problems have been reported in the CFS2 forum when it's used on WinXP in particular.
Another theory being that it's not this at all but the sound card.

To start with you could try reducing the Cache settings to minimum from the Scenery Library & see if that makes a difference. There's no need to cache scenery unless you're running on a minimum install of FS2002 when the scenery is read from the disk. Also, free up as many system resources as possible by shutting down all unnecessary backgound applications before using the sim. Anti-virus programs & system monitoring applications like Norton Disk Doctor are known resource hogs.

You might want to let us know which card you are running with which drivers set, as some don't match up too well and can slow things down.
Also do you have DirectX 9.0?

Are you using accelerated time? I've noticed that under 4x or greater time acceleration you'll fly faster than the scenery can update. Slowing down usually let's it catch up again.

Depending on how fast you're flying and how close you are to the ground, 1.4GHz is not that fast a cpu when it comes to refresh rates, even with a fair bit of RAM.

Fraid you've got to expect this esp if your sliders are all towards max. My specs are higher than yours and I get terrain tile texture popping quite a bit at lower alts

You can adjust your virtual memory settings if you like. But you need to make sure you have room on your hard drive. I would say a hard drive with at least 3/4 room left if not more on the smaller hard drives.

This tweak came from Pureperformance concerning game play. Go to your Device Manager and hit the Performance Tab. Now hit the Virtual Memory button at bottom. Check "Let Me Specify......" and in the Max and Min. boxes, both should be set to 1024 MBs. Hit OK, course you will get the Windows Warning, ignore it and and hit YES.

IF you encounter any problems, which I never have, go back and reduce the size of the entry or recheck the "Let Windows Manage Virtual Memory".

Thankyou, everyone who has responded. I will work through all of the recomendations now. They all appear to make sense to me. I will let you know how I go.

Graphics card is G-Force 4 MX420 3D AGP
I checked...  Processor is 1.8Ghz  P4
RAM 512 DDR Ram
Again...thanks guys...let you know...

You can also open the FS2002 cfg file and go down to where it says texture radius etc, and adjust these parameters.  The more you increase these numbers the better the textures may look.  Of course back up the original one first......

As far as I can see, you haven't mentioned which OS you're running.

There is a lot of contrary advice flying around the net about virtual memory settings. If you're running XP I'd advise you to leave it alone. XP runs virtual memory far more efficiently than any other Windows OS and, according to those I've taken advice from who are in a far better position to know than I am, better than any individual would be able to do.

Thanks guys, I have tried all of your suggestions. Still, my system does not pick up the new scenery detail as you fly.
I am thinking that maybe I should reinstall over the top again, and hope that it's a linking type problem.

Because I have a few add-ons, I also hope that the re-install does not clean the directories out. Anyway...we see how I go. Thank you again for your help. You guys are cool.

I have xp - I have used every tweak that has ever been mentioned on the forums - I have 512mb DDR - and I still have the exact same problem you describe - I have resigned myself to live with it until I get the Dinero to get a G4 - I am convinced I just simply do not have enough card - If you do have enough card, maybe it is not configured right or your drivers are not correct.
