Postby Air Boss » Sun May 04, 2003 10:12 pm

Im running FS2002Pro on XP Pro with a AMD1900, 768 ram, 128 Gforce 4.  It was working fine after I first loaded it but after a few days it starting running VERY slow or it wont load up at all.  I tried looking in the forums and the search and could not find anything.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanxs

Do you have any background programs running such as anti-virus software, as they are a real memory hog?
Also have you got the latest drivers set and directX v9?

With the set-up you have the original drivers should be giving you plenty of performance.     It sounds like you have just installed things and unless you have some reasons to the contrary I personally would un-install and try again.      Failing that come back with a fuller decription of what the problem is, frame rates etc, there's some pretty clever guys around here that may be able to put you right.   For example, have you added any download stuff or are you running with a new clean program.    Hit control z to get your frame rates (in case you didn't realise.)

Good luck.

Defrag the hard drive lately?  This was a performance boost for me.

SP1 is supposed to help matters also.  At least it seemed to assist me a bit.

For what its worth,I followed the above suggestion, and upgraded my directx to V9 from V3,HUGE IMPROVEMENT!!! Its still not perfect,as I only have 128mb RAM,but it made the program mutch better, this in conjunction with reseting my XP settings to "PERFORMANCE"HEY,altleast I can fly now without the program chopping up! :D
To bad I cant make a living out of this, but it would probably kill me.

Really? I've got winXP and I took a look at the windows task manager and the Norton threads only use around 4 mb, is that bad?

The amount it uses depends when you look. ;)

The problem is that as files are loaded in, they get scanned assuming you have real time scanning (which recent Norton AV software does). This happens constantly in the background and can have a detrimental effect on the appearance of the dreaded "blurries".

At these times, not only is extra RAM used by the antivirus software, but of course the files don't load as fast, which can slow the update of scenery around you.

I've never measured this, so it may or may not be a significant amount of time difference, but bearing in mind that the RAM available to store the files at the point of loading is reduced by the antivirus software, it happens at the worst possible time from an FS2002 point of view.

Because Anti virus can cause such headaches in performance I have completely removed mine.  Besides it is just taking up space.  Although I have the luxury of having two computers.  I have one computer that is for the internet only and the other is the one that I play my games on.  Internet=antivirus, Non-internet=no antivirus.  If you can, it may be worthwhile to get rid of the antivirus and any other programs that you don't need.  Once I did this and then installed SP1, I saw an improvement in performance.  Granted I am not running my sliders on full, but at least I am running in the top end of the scale...
