Hello All,

I am posting this a second time because the one I posted last night seems to have disapeared!

My question is....does FS2002 take into account ice buildup on an aircraft?
The reason I ask is that I was flying my Baron over the Rocky Mountains and then suddenly it rolled to the left and started to nose dive!

It was all I could do to level out and start climbing again so that I could get over the mountain that was right in front of me!

The only thing I could think of as to why this happened, is that the temperature was -15 degrees Celcius at the time. After that I actived the de-icing and the rest of the flight was ok....

So DOES FS2002 take into consideration ice build-up and will it react accordingly????

FS simulates some what aircraft icing.  I have had similar experiences of loss of altitude and engine failure due to what seemed appropriate, icing.  Otherwise there would be no real other explanation of this occuring.  This usually occurs when temp. is freezing and you are in the clouds.  If that was your case, you probably experienced icing....

Yes.. it happens, and it's quite realistic.

I was flying with a friend (on-line) in Moonies "trying" to ice-up.  We didn't set the actual Icing tab under weather, but we did set the "advanced weather" for icing conditions..

Decending through 10,000 it all happened right on cue. First the pitot tube froze and the ASI went dead, followed by the rest of the "tube dependent" instruments.

Then airspeed (you could tell by the way the plane handled) started to near stall, even though we were now level. Full throttle didn't help much and when we started to "try" to climb..  it all fell appart (including us,,right out of the sky, like a rock !).

I'll try to remember the exact weather settings and post them here.

Happens in jets too. I was climbing in an Airbus A320 the other day, and the airspeed indicator dropped to zero, and elements of the autopilot stopped working. Then I remembered that I hadn't turned the pitot heat and engine deicer switches on! After a while the plane recovered, but it was 'flying by the seat of your pants' for a while, I can tell you!

I believe I have also experienced icing a few times while climbing to high altitude flight levels.
I remember one incident where I was flying the 737-400 and around 30,000 it started loosing altitude and stalling for no reason, this was the dreamfleet greatest airliners add-on, the AP was set for the climb but the plane was crapping out.
I ended up fighting it back to a level flight at around FL260 and by the time I figured out the problem ATC had cancelled my IFR flight plan, due to the numerous requests to expedite my climb to FL360, and of course there is no option to tell ATC that you have a problem.
Anyway, logic told me that I must be icing up so I clicked on all the de-icing switches and eventually made a successful climb up to my desired flight level with no further problems, and continued my flight VFR.

It's all been explained very nicely above so I won't add further useless comment to the main question.

Just a small point though - the default Baron panel de-icing switched for "Boot De-Ice" and "Prop De-ice" are dummies. They don;t do anything apart from move and click.

These aspects of flight dynamics are modelled in FS2002 and I managed to fix the switches in my own version of the Baron Panel to have an actual effect. If you fly the Baron, you might want to download my panel and crib the gauges, even if you don't like the panel itself.

I've never experienced icing in the Baron. With your warning light and icing switches i've never forgotten. Gonna have to try it out and see what happens.

I remember bringing this subject up regarding carburettor icing, just after FS 2002 came out.
I mainly fly small single engine piston aircraft, (Lycomings, Continentals, etc), and have always applied carburettor heat when closing the throttle prior to landing, to prevent carburettor icing, and also applying it regularly under low temperature conditions during normal cruise, as you should.... ;)...!
But I have always found that the only way I could simulate actual engine failure due to low temperature icing was to go to Menu > Aircraft > System Failures and set an "actual time" for an engine failure to occur, which it does, to the minute!
Obviously this is not very realistic, in that the failure does not occur randomly when NOT applying carburettor heat..!
I have tried all sorts of weather conditions to generate icing in the carburettor but have never got it to work realistically and cause the engine to cut-out!!
I rather think it was something that was not programmed into FS 2002?
I hope it will appear in the next FS 2004 version, as it is a vital action which piston engined pilots must always be aware of....
...apply carburettor heat regularly, or your engine WILL cut-out when you least expect it... ...!

oh it indeed does simulate icing, i was on my first flight of some guys new 717 and now there is a hole in the middle of booneville high school where it just dropped as i forgot to apply deicing and pitot heat.  comming in for final approach aswell so even more of a pain

Might have happened to me in a 727 last night
Climbing through FL150 over Frankfurt (sp) speed fell to 120knts, engines 2 and 3 failed  and I stalled
however this was in summer

haha i was more going on about the original icing question there:)
but yes indeed i do remember during those lessons, i even got yelled at once for forgetting
great fun really i just find it fascinating it can happen at upwards of 20 degrees celcius or somewhere in that region but i would like to see it included properly in 2004
