Programs running in background ( Help)

Postby Tomcat61 » Fri Mar 07, 2003 12:46 am

Hi all, they say that to get the best performance out of FS2002, you should close all programs, correct ??
So when I hit Cnt -Alt-Dlt, I have 24 processors running.

Which ones can I safely close?, or to make it easier for me, which ones should stay running at all times?

Thanks, as I think I have to much stuff running in the background, maybe slowing down my FS2002.

Thanks again.

You have to be pretty careful what you close or you lose your system.

The real frame rate killers are generally virus scanning/killing applications. If you have one, turn that off when you're running FS2002.

Unless you have shedloads of other stuff in your systray, you'd be well advised to leave the rest alone (particularly on Win XP).

Hello,
you can use the "End it All" product, it's free, it works , it will kill what may be killed

I hope it helps

True, especially with WinXP you need to be carefull which processes you kill. I've had to restart my computer many times after killing the wrong process.

You should generally leave things alone unless you really know what you're doing

Don't use Enditall if you have windows XP - they make no claims for it working properly in that OS.

Hello,
I use "end it all 2" on my XP Pro SP1 without any problem.
I agree that in the advertising there is no indication if it's XP BUT I did send an e-mail and the answer was XP is supported.

With 98 or ME,,  it's simple,,,

Before you fly,, kill everything except "systray" and "explorer"...

That puts my resources at 94%  :)

If you don't mess around in your start-up menu (via "msconfig),, everything goes back to normal if you need to re-boot..

In Win98 you should be safe killing everything except explorer and systray in the task manager.  The Win98 task manager isn't that good and doesn't show you everything that's running.  Another example of MS protecting you from yourself.  I use a 3rd party task manager that shows more but unless you really know what you're doing you can and probably will crash the machine.  As long as you don't change any of the standard startup processes it's no big deal - just reboot.

The XP task manager shows more running processes.  You can find out what they do here http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist ... sklist.htm and make your own decisions.

If you want to tweak things even more get Custom Startup here http://gboban.hypermart.net/csup/ ($10) which will allow you to define several different startup profiles (one for gaming, one for surfing, etc.).  I don't know whether this works with XP, though.

With Windows 2000s task manager, it shows loads of stuff, but some things it just doesn't let you close. It just says "Operation could not be completed. Access is denied". I close everything it lets me close, and that works just fine.
