Please Help-Editing Problems

Hello all i'm new to this forum.
Anyway, I want to export the .mdl files
(FS2002's 3d models)
to another more useable format (example: .3ds).
I have a program to create .mdl's for FS2002, but I want to export the standard .mdls first to get an idea of how they work.
I have tried some programs like 3dWin4 but when I try to import a FS2002 .mdl it just comes blank.
Hope you can help (sorry I may have confused you!)
