Using FS 2k4 autopilot in FS 2k2

Postby Gringo6 » Fri Oct 28, 2005 4:07 pm

Several weeks ago I asked if the autopilot settings on FS 2k4 airplanes would improve the autopilot response if applied to FS 2k2 airplanes.

I now have my answer. I recently purchased FS 2k4 (which I regard as inferior to FS 2k2) and copied the autopilot section of The Learjet (which they now call Bombardier) and pasted it into the autopilot section of the Learjet in FS 2k2.

YES, there is a dramatic improvement in the autopilot response of the Learjet in FS 2k2.

So, from this abbreviated test I conclude that the autopilot response of most airplanes (especially the jets) in FS 2k2 can be materially improved by using the format of FS 2k4.

I think you need get used to it. Most FS2004 users were hesitant when switching over from FS2004, but I think most people like it better.

Even Fozzer was very skeptical, and even after buying FS2004, he still flew FS2002, but now, he's happily flying around the bay area with FS2004 8)

I also reluctantly have to admit that FS9 is better. And, against all the odds, I get better frame rates than with FS2k2!

I had FS9 for nearly a year before I made a full switch from FS2002 - & these days I would never go back. My biggest gripe was (what seemed like) an overcomplicated GPS, but now I realise it's a much better system.

Cheers,

I am amazed.

The purpose of my post was to advise those using FS 2K2 of a better way to use the FS 2K2 autopilot, not to start a discusssion of the relative merits of FS 2k2 vs. FS2k4.

Sorry if I touched any tender spots, that was not my intention.

In a way your suggesting a person pays $40 for a full program just to make the autopilot in an older product a little better?
But on the other side of the coin, it does help those who have both but cant run FS9 but can at least improve fs2002.

Theres two ways to look at it ;) :)

No. it's not necessary to buy FS 2k4 just for the program. There are many "add-on" aircraft on this site that have the newer format for the autopilot, even FS 2k2 aircraft.

And this newer format can be added to any FS 2k2 aircraft by using notepad to make the additional entries in the aircraft file.

The question I had and was trying to answer was this: Does this newer format actually work in FS 2k2 ? Is the FS 2k2 autopilot influenced by it ? And the answer is yes.

So anybody who is dis-satisfied with the operation of their FS 2k2 autopilot can improve it by using the newer format. They don't have to buy FS 2k4 for this reason alone.

I bought FS 2k4 with the hope that it would be an improvement over FS 2k2. To date I have not been
satisfied with FS 2k4. I'm not trying to pick an argument with anybody - I'm just reporting my observations on the autopilot issue and expressing my view of how the two F/Sims appeal to me.

I tried it and it didn't work for me.  I tried it with several different aircraft in FS2002 and they behaved much worse, specifically, on an auto approach, the autopilot had great difficulty intercepting the glide slope.  It would pitch down excessively, then undercompensate in pitching up to regain the glide slope.  Meantime, each configuration change made things worse.  The autopilot would not regain the glideslope at all.  I reinstalled the FS2002 autopilot entry in the aircraft.cfg file and then the autopilot performed normally.  So I don't think the FS2004 autopilot entry in the aircraft.cfg file is an improvement.
