Understanding VOR tuning!

I am new to flight sim navigation, and there is a few things I yet do not understand.

When tuning the NAV receivers to the frequencies of the VOR stations, for example the Manchester VOR frequency is 114.4 MHZ, the guide books extra always gives a "ident" with the frequency for example Manchesters is ident  "MHT". Do I have to input these ident letters into the Nav receiver anywhere, or have I only to tune into the given frequency?

I would appreciate it if someone can help me here.

Hello Steve595 and welcome to the FS Navigation which is indeed as important as entertaining.

The letters "MHT" is just the identification of the VOR station to which you are tuned to , in order to know which VOR you use for your navigation. Tuning your NAV1 receiver TO THE FREQUENCY is enough. You can use then the specific VOR station to navigate. To travel either inbound or outbound the VOR station either directly from your current position or intercepting a specific course.

        You can also refer to the groung school book from FS2002. By reading that book and praticing a little bit, you will understand easily VOR.

Also, if you've noticed, there's a Morse Code identifier given with the VOR info....it's the series of dots and dashes. Tune the VOR frequency, click the corresponding Nav receiver you're using (on some planes there are LED's labeled for each Comm and Nav) and you can listen to a series of tones (long tone for dash, short tone for dot) to help you specifically identify the VOR station.

I wanted first to make sure before trying to navigate using the VOR'S I hadn't missed anything. I am slowly understanding the concept of it all.

The fs map system showing the VOR'S doesn't show the 360 decree radials to help beginners very much. Is there anywhere I can download charts showing the radials better?

I believe you are reffering to the airways as they appear in the map and the radials they follow from VOR stations. In some cases you can retrieve some charts from several VACC sites. Just go to http://vateud.org/default.cfm which is the VACC sites for Europe and from there you can follow links to specific countries' VACC sites where you will find some charts for Europe. However you will feel it is not enough. I have the same problem.

Anyway, even if you do not know specific airways radials you can still navigate VOR to VOR (flying from VOR to VOR until you reach your destination).
Say, that you want to fly from airport A1 to airport A2. You see the map and conclude that a number of VORs are located between A1 and A2 and theese are V1, V2, V3. Right after you takeoff from A1 you tune your receiver to V1 and turn your VOR needle (using the OBS knob) so that you find a course towards the tuned VOR. Fly on this course so that the needle remains aligned or press the NAV button on the autopilot. As soon as you are above V1, tune to V2 find a new course that aligns the needle to V2 and so on.

Yes Poseidon, I am refering to the fs 2002 maps which lacks the VOR detail. I think I will take up your advice and try your link to get some charts.

To understand VOR Navigation better I feel more detailed charts would help me.

If you are really interested in navigating by GPS and obtaining all the VOR, NDB, ATIS, NAV/COM frequencies and airport details, etc.... 8)...!
....And you have a few pennies to spare... ::)...!
