Also, if you're looking to make it as realistic as possible, then I'd definitely pick up a microphone or headset (they can be purchased very cheap).
You'll probably also want to download (free) Roger Wilco and SquawkBox. RW is a voice chat client, which will allow you and your controllers to communicate via voice. SB is a program that allows you to file flight plans with ATC, and a few other goodies.
There's an AWESOME tutorial on the VATSIM site, and I'd definitely recommend reading it. I tried to connect without reading it, and ended up giving up. Once I read it, I was in like....well, you know...
