What is Altimeter 2992 from ATC?

When I am flying ILS, ATC always tells me "Altimeter 2992" I have no idea what this means. I know it does not mean "set the altimeter to an altimeter of 2992 ft" since ATC tells you to set it to altitudes with multiples of 100.

Can anybody please answer this? I feel that I am missing valuable information when this is dictated.

This is a sticky subject that has been covered just a couple of days ago if you care to search back a few pages.

2992 does not refer to the level your at in feet, it refers to atmospheric pressure at ground level.

29.92mb or 1013.15hpa are the standard pressure you would set your altimeter fo flight at Flight level
you must set your altimeter at this pressure each time you climb uper than 18000feet

I don't suppose shifting the FS-FAQ to the top of the menu is an option?

Try setting your altimeter at something other than what ATC tells you to set it at, and you'll see why you have to set it.  lol

If you don't, it's entirely possible that your altimeter reading could read 8,000 feet while you're sitting at the gate.  Not too much of a problem til you're trying to land IFR.  lol

To set it to the current level of BAROMETRIC PRESSURE, you can simply press "B" on the keyboard.  29.92 inches, and is based on the scale of mercury or 1013.1 millibars.  On what is defined as a STANDARD DAY, the barometric pressure is 29.92 inches of mercury and the temprature is 15 degress celcius (59 degrees farenheit).
