GPS and VFR flights

Perhaps I am not doing something right but...

When create a flight plan and choose my elevation and choose VFR using GPS, I take off and once I get close to cruising level I activate autopilot.
The plane seems to stay in a straight line that I am currently heading but not towards the destination!

Am I missing something

Cherokee the AP will just keep you in a straight line in most planes! Its like cruise control on a car, you push the switch and it holds the settings, when you need to turn off goes the AP, you execute the turn and then flip it back on.
As I fly manual all the time I have no idea about getting route following AP.

If you mean you want the plane to follow the GPS line, there is a switch for NAV<>GPS on the panel that should be switched to GPS. Then set autopilot on NAV.

This problem stumped me for awhile too, but I found the solution: the autopilot is set to follow the GPS only if your autopilot is set on GPS mode, using the NAV/GPS switch, which is on most a/c autopilot panels.  If you can't find it on a certain panel, you might try exchanging the autopilot in the panel.cfg file for another from your gauges folder.  You can find instructions on how to do something like this almost anywhere on an FS site.

After setting the NAV/GPS switch, you should be able to simply activate the autopilot, click the NAV Hold Switch and the a/c should intercept the course, and then follow it for as long as you want it to.

On a related note ...

Why does ATC not allow me to take off in the direction of my planned flight? I may be doing something wrong, but when I ask to take off in a particular heading, I don't get directed to the right runway. I end up taking off, then turning to intercept the GPS line.

Another question just to clear up something.....

If I create a flight, say from KRNO, where the Active is 16R. Say I start from the Large Cargo Gate at the terminal. ATC will, by default direct me to depart from RW 16R. This I know.

But, if I create a flight starting from the other direction, (34L), and slew to the terminal, before I contact ATC, when I contact them for clearance, will they still direct me to 16R?

If you have everything set, check and make sure the wing leveler switch is off.
