Does Downloaded Scenery make a big diffrence.

Postby Tomcat61 » Tue Feb 18, 2003 1:01 am

Hi all, just wanted to ask, if you download scenery does it make a big diffrence, I mean is it worth it.

Can someone post some before and after shots of added scenery?

Thanks again...Tomcat61

It depends on what exactly you are after.
Meshes make the terrain more map accurate, other add-ons can improve the quality of your scenery. I've got quite a few add-ons for London.
Try some freeware from here and see if you like it.

If you are flying some of the bigger jets, most likley you will be taking off and heading up up up!!! You might want aome Add-on clouds since this is where you will be for most of your trip.
If you are flying some of the prop planes around more of your local areas or if you just want to "See the Sights", then add-onn scenery is great. "Gerish's Tree Library" is a great add on for trees. Download Version 2. It has 64 additional types of trees and with this 2nd version, it is not too bad on your frame rates! If there is an airport that you really enjoy flying around, you can always search for this that particular add-on. Remember to always make a back up. I downloaded a LaGuardia Airport scenery when I had FS2000 and did not make a back up. It bogged my system down so much, I did not even bother to fly in/out of there anymore b'cause I could not recover the original file, (that was with my old system). Go to AVSIM and search for what you want. After all this rambling, If your system can handle the scenerey, I think it is worth adding it on, it will enhance your flying experience!

Fly2e,

You make an excellent point about backups.  I have added so many planes, modules, sceneries and gauges that it would be impossible to restore my original configuration without some kind of backup.

Although it seems like a nuisance at the time I just keep a little file called AddOns.txt in my FS2K2 folder.  Whenever I add or delete something I make a record of it there.  If I use a self-installer I track it with Total Uninstall or InCtrl.

And whenever I download an addon I save the original zip file on a separate partition.  When there's enough there slap it on a CD.

I like to add sceneries for major airports.  For example there is a nice scenery for Ronald Reagan Intl.  But it is very frame heavy.  I also have Honolulu Intl by Lago, and it to can be frame heavy.  These are nice for the eye candy visuals, but other than that the most enjoyment I get out of scenery addons is the FS Sky for clouds and terrain meshes for accuracy in the terrain.  I have all the sectors for the USA and a few for Europe.

It is all a matter of what you want out of FS and what your computer can handle.  Test a few and see what you like.

There isn't a single mesh. You have to download a bit at a time, somewhere like Germany for instance takes about 5 meshes between 15-20mb each!
I've got a full set of meshes that cover the whole of Europe, as that is where I do most of my flying.
