Saints talk

Postby A-10 » Mon Jan 04, 2010 6:56 pm

I can't believe the Saints lost that game last night sure they haven't been doing too well lately but I know the coaches stratagey, he dosen't want Shockey to get injured that's why he hasn't played yet, because they are keeping him out of the game so that their chances of winning the playoffs will be much greater, but that's just my opinion

That's probably it.  The Colts took Manning out in the first quarter and Buffalo clobbered them.

try being a broncos fane. 6-0 start, beat 4 playoff teams, almost beat 2 others. Only to miss the playoffs for the 4th year in a row, with losses, to the chiefs and raiders at home. :-X

It was week 16. Do they really need to win?  ;)

No, they (the Saints) didn't need to win.

The week 15 loss was a legitimate loss and the dream of a perfect season was over.  I never thought the Saints were good enough to pull off a perfect season but the Colts were.

After losing the perfect season but still having the division championship and home field advantage there is no need to risk getting starters hurt - except for the fact that the fans pay good money to see the game and deserve to see their team play their best but the NFL doesn't care about fans.

The losses to Tampa Bay and Carolina were "who cares?" losses.

I've always believed the NFL draft comes into play here. It seems to be designed in a way that is intended to give the troubled teams a boost by giving them more first and second round picks. If your team is garanteed to be in the playoffs, why win every game? You would be changing your position in the next draft. That's how it worked 25 yrs ago as I understood it. Maybe that has changed?

Mostly correct.

The worst team (Rams 1-15) gets the first draft pick and the best team (the Super Bowl winner) gets the last pick.

I suppose it's possible but I can't believe a team on the bottom would deliberately throw a game just top get to rock bottom for a better draft pick.

It wouldn't do a team on the top, like the Saints or the Colts, any good to deliberately throw a game at the end of the regular season.  At that point their goal is to win the Super Bowl, not necessarily to win every regular season game.  The best way to win the Super Bowl is to keep your starters healthy.  If you happen to lose a game that doesn't count for anything well, so be it, as long as the starters are healthy.

Any team that gets into the playoffs doesn't care about draft position.  They want to win the Super Bowl.  The only way to win the Super Bowl is to win every playoff game.
