It looks like FSU edged out Alabama.

Coaches pick Florida State as No. 1

"The Florida State Seminoles aren't going anywhere, as the defending national champions are the No. 1 team in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll, which was released Thursday.

FSU, led by Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston, got 56 of the 62 first-place votes.

"We're very excited about being No. 1 and happy to be No. 1, but we understand that we have to play like No. 1 and play great football," FSU coach Jimbo Fisher told USA Today. "That's going to be our objective. We're proud to start there and now we just have to go play great football.

"Alabama, Oklahoma, Oregon and Auburn, which lost to FSU in the final BCS title game last season, round out the top five. Ohio State starts at No. 6, and is followed by UCLA, Michigan State, South Carolina and Baylor.

Overall, the SEC leads the way with seven teams in the poll. The Pac-12 is represented by six teams, and the Big 12 and Big Ten each have four teams in the poll.

Defending national champs Florida State No. 1 in AP pre-season poll
Florida State, for what it's worth these days, was an overwhelming pick for No. 1 in Sunday's release of the Associated Press pre-season college football poll. The Seminoles garnered 57 of the available 60 first place votes.

Florida State is followed by Alabama, Oregon, Oklahoma and Ohio State. Auburn is sixth followed by UCLA, Michigan State, South Carolina and Baylor. USC is No. 15.

We temper the poll release news because Florida State is an obvious No. 1 choice, coming off a 14-0 season in which it returns Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston.

We don't have a cute stadium name like "The Swamp'' or "Death Valley" but we have the worst weather in the world and our fans are amazing.

I believe the top 4 will weather well this season.... barring injuries, bad bounces and egregious pac-10 ball managing by the refs. FSU was favored to win in 2000, remember?

Florida State suspends Jameis Winston for first half vs. Clemson

Florida State is suspending quarterback Jameis Winston for the first half of its game Saturday vs. No. 24 Clemson in the wake of an obscene phrase he yelled in a public space Tuesday.

Jimbo isn't so stupid that he's going to keep him out of the entire game.

Florida State suspends Jameis Winston for Clemson game
