herb, that would corrupt the minds of America's youth and lead to harder drugs and DEATH!
They managed to buy enough votes in Congress and the Senate to get the stuff outlawed, usually over 3 martini lunches or 5 Scotch dinners.
Hipocrasy at it's best! Being drunk is good, stoned bad...go figure... 
Now all the hippies and their kids form the 60's are growing up and leading (?!?!?~) the country, these silly laws are going the way of the dinosaurs they really are. Right up there with having to walk in front of a motorcar waving a red flag or not being able to tie your horse in front of town hall...
