When I was in Jr High School, our nickname/mascot was the "Savages". In High School it was the "Redskins". The names were never meant in a derogatory manor, it was a statement of pride, a name of power. So many people out in the world are making noise over something that is hurting NO ONE! Leave well enough alone ........ haven't you all done enough to destroy this country??

The problem here is that "The times, they are a-changin". What was OK long ago may not be OK today. It's not so much political correctness as social perspectives. Some don't care, some do care. Oftentimes those who do care win out in the end.

One example is that at Univ of Miami football games long ago, the band would play "Dixie". That was eventually put to a stop by black Univ of Miami students who felt it was offensive.

So we either adapt with the times, or live in the past. Some like change, some do not. What I feel is important is that those who are offended look carefully at exactly who they are and why they are offended, and whether the issue is really worth fighting over.

That's my 5 cents. Used to be 2 cents, but the times, they have a-changed.

And of course, there's this kind of stuff:

Times, they are a changing. True.

And the times now say that the concern of the few, or even the infinitesimal, far outweigh that of the many and the good of society.

The greatest change that I've seen is the long trend towards ME. Whatever I want is good, to hell with everyone else.

This is not individualism. This is arrogant egoism.

So that there is no confusion as to what I mean;

Individualism - Belief in the primary importance of the individual and in the virtues of self-reliance and personal independence.

Arrogant - The offensive display of superiority or self-importance.

Egoism - The habit of valuing everything only in reference to one's personal interest.

But that's just the opinion of a dinosaur.

HEY! Anyone want to watch Miley Cyrus or Justin Bieber videos?

C'mon now, be fair! I agree with them and the rest of you too. If it's bad to be called Red, then it's bad to be called white too. And Blue, unless you're red, white and blue. I guess we're all going down the same wode. <<u

Well... to be fair, most native Americans native could care less.

A few do care, so maybe we should make the change.

On the other hand, more than a few think that you should give us back our lands! Sounds good to me.

Who wants to offend anyone? I have a huge respect for native Americans (and you can use members of the likes of the KKK for medical experiments for all I care :P )

& yes -- there is a good reason 'politics talk' is dicouraged here ..... :hand:  :P

I think I posted a long while ago that I'm a bit mongrel. I've reduced it to Celto-Germanic-Native American.

For the most part, my Native American relatives that remained in NH have quite well mixed with the descendants of former non-natives (there has still been an identity maintained but individuals were allowed individual thought). Most that I've met would not object to the "Redskin" application to red-suited palefaces or scorched-faces. In fact, we're aware that it's meant more complimentary -- certainly not to belittle one's own team -- to bestow a sense of bravery, honor and fortitude.

What's unfortunate is that any definitive word can be used derisively; we are the ones who associate the negative or positive anotations to them.
