Ditka gets his props

In 93 seasons of Bears football, perhaps no one personifies the club more than Mike Ditka, certainly not in the last half century.

(Bears chairman George) McCaskey's latest move has much more meaning. He is the guiding force behind the decision for Ditka's jersey No. 89 to be retired in a ceremony at halftime of the game Monday night against the Cowboys at Soldier Field.

"It was overdue," McCaskey said. "Mike Ditka is the Chicago Bears. There is probably no more iconic Bear alive than Mike Ditka."

You know, this used to be a helluva good country. I don't understand what's gone wrong with it. - George Hanson, 1969
