Song Lengths

Postby BFMF » Sat Mar 18, 2006 4:42 pm

I was looking on Itunes for the Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture earlier, and I noticed that there were a lot of versions by a lot of different artists. That didn't surprise me, but what did surprise me is that no song length was the same. There were versions ranging from just a few minutes to over sixteen minutes. Why is this?
Most were between 15- 16 minutes.

I'm going to go back to my brother's later and try to pick one to download, but with so many different versions at different lengths, it's gonna be a hard choice.

Out of curiosity, when in this situation, do you all just randomly pick one?

Ok. I just want to listen to like I've heard it in the past. I'll pick one, and if I don't like it, I'll try another variation ;)

The 1812 Overture should be just over 14 mins, any shorter and its been abridged any longer and it's being murdered.
If there's information about the orchestra and conductor then go for the one you might know, it's more than likely  a well respected version.

Like almost all classical music.  Do conductors go out of their way to make music slow and boring?

Oh sweet baby Jesus...  I'm not sure which is worse between the two.  Simply put, real singers can hold a note!  Sheesh!  Bring out the Russians! ;D
