OMG! Somthing is wrong with my guitar I think

Postby Anti-Societys Snake » Sat Mar 19, 2005 9:08 pm

My low E string is breaking in this realllllly weird way.

It is breaking at the bridge. It is "Stripping", When I say that I mean it is snapping except for part of the string (About the size of the High E string) is still holding. This getting very annoyinmg and expensive.

Any ideas as to what the problem is and/or how to fix it?

Buy a heavier gauge string?

Next time you have to replace another string try and look right where it always breaks and see if there are ANY little imperfections in the metal in the local area. It could be that there is a little "weld-booger' or sliver that got "chromed?" into the piece?

This is a tremolo equipped guitar correct? if so does this happen more often when you are using the tremelo? If you're not sure try not using the trem for a few days and see what happens... ;-)

The bridge saddle (little piece of the bridge that the string rides on top of) might be forcing its way into the string windings.  Try this: new low E string, same gauge.  Wind it very slowly and watch the string where it crosses the saddle to see if the windings start to separate.  Then tune slowly and keep watching. Play awhile and keep watching it.  I doubt if it's the string, even light gauge low E's shouldn't break like that.  Whereas I have done extensive neck-setting work, I do not know anything about tremolo setups, so I can't comment on whether that might have anything to do with it.  Also, when does the string break?  When/if you use the wammy bar?  Overnight?  Just when playing normally?  Try an A string in the E position and see what happens.  Just some ideas to help.  I know what a pain guitars can be sometimes, but I've never had a problem like this in my 40 years of playing.

I never ever use the Trem. And it breaks when I'm playing.... could this have any thing to do with strumming too hard?

I would have to agree with this, if the same string keeps breaking in the same way (especially the low E) there has got to be something cutting the string.
