What do you think of the "revival" of 80's hair metal with Dream Theater?

 Dream Theater never actually went away, and considering the enormous talent that comprises that band I never really considered them to be in the same catagory with most of the 80's "hair" bands.

 I always figured the music that Dream Theater creates is just far too complex for your average music listener to comprehend, that's why they have always been a mostly underground band, they were never about three chords, hairspray, and singin' about havin sex, they are much more complicated than that, and always have been.

 Personally I love Dream Theater, I think they are one of the most creative and talented band of musicians out there, but I don't believe they will ever become very popular in the mainstream due to the fact that they play so many notes, and most people just can't handle music with lot's of notes, they really are musicians musicians, if you know what I mean.

 Dream Theater 80's hair metal? Not hardly. See Poison or Cinderella.

I think the "term" givin to thier music is Progressive metal.
They fall into the same catagory as Stratovarious, who by they way are another awesome band with great talent!

I met the guys from Dream Theater a few times. Back in the day, they used to rehearse at the same studio that my band did. I know the drummer. Ironically years later, the two guys from my Band that went on to start the band "Big Wreck", were opening for them when they were touring the East Coast. We partied all night with them at a show here in NY!  ;D  It was their last gig together , Dream Theater and Big Wreck, before Dream Theater went on a tour of Japan.
I think they are very talented but I think that they really try to be to "technical" sometimes and the songs start to lose their feel. A dozen rhythm changes and a million different notes is a bit too much for me. They will come up with a really good sounding flow and then totally leave it and change to some strange melody that is hard to follow.
The only two metal bands that could pull that off and have a song that flowed and had feeling was Queensryche and Iron Maiden, in my opinion!

Dream Theater are collectively the best group of musicians in the world in my opinion.
James LaBrie - Singerm he can hit some fairly high notes but from hearing other un recorded songs or mp3s from him when he is singing in other bands you can see he can sing at a normal pitch and also very low. with a range like that he is one awsome singer.
Mike Portnoy - Drummer. He has to be the fastest, most influential, and best drummer around. Just download some DT videos and see the effor that he puts in. The drummer in my band uses DT drum beats just to practice as they have such a wide range of techniques and rhythms.
John Myung - What a bass gutarist. He plays it as if it is a guitar. I sometimes play bass for my band, depending o the song, and plaing it feels almost clumsy. Myung can hit anything. And he has the nicest looking bass ive seen, although it is a bit chunky.
Jordan Rudess - Have you seen his fingers move. no? exactly. He is probably one of the fasest and most flowing pianists in the world and he has the hard job of fitting keyboards into a Prog. Rock band.
John Petrucci - My HERO! The only aid i have ever baught in playing guitar was John Petrucii's 'Rock Dicipline'
His playing is so fluid and fast that when im watching it i just stand and stare, or sit and stare (if im sitting at the time)
wow, just wow. If i ever beome anywhere near as talented as him then i will be a happy man. Im 15 at the minute and can play 3 or 4 DT songs completely. Not bad going - what do you guys think.

In answer to the question i have to object to it being a revival. they have never left us, and for a band thats been ging for approximately 2 decades im sure a little rest wouldnt hurt.
And 80s hair metal. You obviously havnt listened to it properly.
Listen to 'Scenes From a memory' the lyrics tell a story. not just sex, drugs and rock n roll here.

Dream Theater are the Most Talented and therefor BEST band in the World...

I believe so but I like them more than Kiss, besides, Kiss never got a vote so..............
I saw DT live in London a couple of years ago and John M had what looked like a 10 or 12 string bass at the start .
Does anyone know what this is called? - it had the strings all in a line and was HUGE

Thats his Affinity series bass. They are usually 6 string. ill see if i can dig a picture up for you

i think one of the requirements to playing it is that you have to be an octopuss, or human with  10 fingers......per hand  ::)

probably s custom made one. I wouldnt imagine the wood costing too much for one but its quite rare to fin 12 string bass bridges  ::)
