Sorry, but KISS sucks, Mudvayne Rules

Postby wiccaboa » Mon Dec 15, 2003 12:34 am

This is just my opinion, but I can't stand KISS. They get your hopes up with the makeup, then let you down. Bands like Slipknot and Mudvayne never let you down.  Sorry if I offended anyone, that was not my intention. I am just exercising my 1st Amendment right. Any further discussion will be met with an open mind. I'm taking all comers.

You have to keep in mind that Kiss was a pretty shocking act back in the day, I can somewhat share the opinion that their gimmicks are pretty crusty after 30 years of the same ol' sh*t, they still have almost exactly the same stage show they have always had throughout their career, and 3-4 years ago they did the "Farewell" tour claiming that Kiss was done, but they are still around, what's up with that?

You have to at least give them credit for paving the way for current bands like Slipknot and Mudvayne, although the music these bands make cannot be compared to Kiss who consistantly produced hits over the years, Kiss really was one of the first bands to push the limits and venture into shocking stage presence and outrageous antics to attract attention, Alice Cooper can also be placed into this category.

I was a huge Kiss fan growing up in the 70's, they really let me down when they tried to go disco, then they got pretty good again in the 80's when they did "Animalize", I can't think of much they have done in the past 10 years that has impressed me, but I did go to see them in Phoenix on the first date of the "Farewell" tour back in 2000, thinking it would be the last chance to ever see them, and here they just played Detroit a couple of weeks ago, I don't think they will ever go away until Gene or Paul dies.

I saw Slipknot a couple of years ago and was not disappointed, however Mudvayne did not show up for the gig like they were supposed to, claiming they were exhausted from touring, they need to get off the drugs and do their jobs, if they can't handle touring and life on the road they should find another line of work, I was very disappointed that Mudvayne dropped off the tour, I really wanted to see them with Slipknot.

I love the first amendment!!
But lets see where your bands are in 30 years.
No wait 5!
And Paz is right if it weren't for KISS, Slipknot and others wouldn't have a chance. Which is obvious because where do you think the idea of outrageous costumes come from?
W.A.S.P. same thing in the '80's KISS took off thier make-up and groups like W.A.S.P. tried to take advantage of it.
They paved the way for muscians to be able to be outrageous and acceptable.
And too a diehard KISS fan even though the show after 30 years might be almost the same it is a way of life. They tried in the late 70 through the 80's to be more like "what was in" and it failed. They go back to how they were in their prime and look what happens.
#1 tour of the year countless times, At last check #2 for the current tour, sold out shows everywhere they go, in places Slipknot and others can only dream of.
If your looking for something new and exciting it won't be found, it has been done in the past and it was done by KISS!!

I appreciate the calm reception guys. Its nice to see ppl discussing things like adults. I DO give credit where credit is deserved, and I give KISS their credit and more. I don't care much about longevity, if a band has just one album that makes an impression, then they have done their jobs. I don't care about big names, I enjoy underground bands as much, if not more than mainstream bands. I also don't like Elvis, but give him credit for allowing my favorite music to become what it is today. I enjoy very emotional music, any emotion, and KISS just never struck an emotional nerve in me. Bands like Staind, Slipknot, Mudvayne, Metallica, Sevendust, Korn, etc. do it for me. Please keep the opinions coming.

I think KISS is great.  I really don't like any of the bands you mentioned  ;) but Metallica.  Metallica used to rules. ;D

I love their stage act.  Loud music, big explotions, fireworks, and Gene's tounge is quite a piece... ;D

I used to listen to Maiden, Helmet, Megadeth, Anthrax, etc., when I was about 15, but when I first heard Korn, my music taste changed entirely. Sorry guys, I still like Mudvayne. As for Quicksand and Rival schools, I am searching for them right now.

ur sure lucky space ace aint seen this thread yet! :D

well i dont come here very often but now that i see this outrageous subject i have to say a few things......

I am with Paz, KISS paved the road (along with Alice) for bands like MudV and Slipknot.....also, they atrted the whole thing of pyrotecnics and kick arse stage shows, from a few flame throwers to have the members levitate over the crowd inthe middle of the concert. they pretty much along with alice came up with the blood-on-stage thing (gene's show before playing god of thunder, right during the intro) or Alice's guillotine act.... Ace's smoking Les Paul... Pete's pyro's and levitation of the drumkit... i mean i can go on for ever...

i thik that Mudvane and Slipknot have deep roots on KISS, Alice Cooper, and of course, Black Sabbath. there is no point on denying it but Sabbath came up with the easy-to-follow, repetitive heavy metal riffs, songs like Iron Man, with the retarded, yet empowering guitar riff, which has been covered by bands from NOFX to Pantera, and SOngs like Black Sabbath, NIB and Paranoid, also covered by many bands. they are concidered the Godfathers of modern metal.

Alic and KISS contributed to Slipknot's and MudV's success by addin the costumes and stage show...back in the day you wont see another band on 7-inch leather heels breathing fire, smashing guitars and electrocuting guitarrists live onstage (Lakeland Fla, 1977, LoveGun Tour... Ace steped on a striped cale and got blown away.... origins of the song Shock Me) also the bloddy stage presented by Gene and Alie clearly shows in today's metal stages.

we cannot diss our past and recognize our present becaue the past lives on in the pressent, and without bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, KISS and Alicce Cooper, there would've been no Mudvane, Korn, Slipknot or any other Metal greatnes of today's music.

I never said that I didn't like Sabbath or Alice Cooper. I like them very much. I said I didn't like, actually can't stand KISS. I just want to reiterate that. I can't stand KISS. Just because they were one of the bands that paved the way for the bands of today, doesn't make them suck any less. I DO NOT LIKE KISS.

I saw Kiss back in the old days with the orginal lineup was still together the first time.  All I can say is, while the music hasn't held up for me, the stage show still lives on as one of the most incredible things I've ever seen.

It's true, that if it weren't for Kiss, then guys like Marilyn Manson wouldn't be around either. I don't think that Kiss can take credit for Alice Cooper though.  They both came up at about the same time.  I think Kiss started in 69, and Alice was near that same time.  By the same token though, if it weren't for Lou Reed, there would be no Kiss.  If it weren't for The Velvet Underground, then I don't think Kiss would have found much appeal.
