don't know if it's just me, but it seems that on many programs on tv, the music is so much louder than it use to be....i have to strain to hear what person or persons are saying....sometimes i think they might as well start singing instead, and turn it into an opera:).......

I haven't watched TV since October of 2007, that's when I said enough is enough, had it with channel surfing, constantly, info-commercials, stupid TV Pointless shows, dumb reality shows that aren't even reality and the annoying commercials, and I was having to pay 53.00 dollars a month for that junk,,,

then I thought, wow, I could kill the TV, save 53.00 a month and go back flight simming and take that 53.00 a month and buy some really nice PAYWARE Aircraft,, so that's what I did, and I didn't even have to spend 53 a month every month to get nice quality aircraft.

I used to be a TV Addict too, since I was 4 or 5 yrs.old till I was like 42, back when TV was a lot better than it is today, the tv shows suck, and the movies today are just so cheesy and stupid, Ughhhhhhh

I have more enjoyment out of flight simulator and find more time to get things done, like Sleep for example rest my Brain Cells from all this thinkin' I been doin !!!

Just the computer is all I got now and that's good enough fer me !

This has been going on for many years. Not only the music but sound effects like walking on a gravel path or even raindrops are out of all proportion. Plus the fact that so many modern actors mumble or whisper making it really difficult to hear the dialogue, especially when they're not facing the camera. My hearing is still pretty good but I often switch on the subtitles so I can follow the plot.

A famous film director said in a recent interview that 70 - 80 percent of a movie is sound. I don't know what that says for modern film production.

As well as the rest of the rubbish on the TV....

The thing that REALLY annoys me, are today's science programs and documentaries, like some of the recent "space" documentaries, which are drowned out by incessant background music and sound effects, including the New York Philharmonic Orchestra backed by the Hollywood Heavenly Choir.
...not to mention all the add-on, unreal, computer graphics, fooling everyone into thinking its real!

In the olden days we used to enjoy quiet "Open University" documentaries which were sensible, highly educational, and a pleasure to watch and listen to.

Those days have long gone, with the introduction of all the background "noise" to accompany programs.

Sensible folks constantly complain about it in the media, but still the film makers continue to ignore their complaints, and bombard our eyes and ears with all this unnecessary add-on trash!

My old ears now find it painful trying to differentiate between the sound of speech, and all the rest of the background music and sound effects, and as Doug mentioned, everyone seems to "mumble" nowadays, instead of speaking clearly, making it more difficult to follow the thread!

Most TV programs and films leave me feeling confused in the end, in the conflagration of sound surrounding me!

TV is something I prefer not to watch most of the time....

Most of my day is spent listening to my trusty radio set very quietly burbling in the background, whilst I do other more interesting things!

Our overseas members my be surprised to know that it is a criminal, prison-able, offence in the UK to switch our TV's on without purchasing a TV Licence beforehand, even before watching anything!...>>>

It's a right pain in the *rse........."Ripper Street" on the BBC, A glossy period drama with a brilliant cast, wonderful sets and a fantastic story line that you could only follow if you had subtitles switched on..........An otherwise brilliant series ruined by mumbling and over the top background noise.

As for the rest of the selection: There is some good stuff available but separating the wheat from the chaff is damn nearly impossible......I now use the view on demand channels on the web, 4oD, BBC i Player etc. So much easier to find good stuff. Recently watched all episodes of Hill Street Blues again, great nostalgia trip.

But over here there seems to be some progress among the tv-channels contributers.
In a short time, you can choose what channels you want and what you dont want, and therefor not forcing anyone to buy a package with a lot stupid channels!!
I like that, then i can remove all channels with stupid commersials inside a program or movie! I'll then save money for bying batteries to the remote control when zapping away

When I switch my Television on nowadays to watch a program, I mostly find that after an indeterminate time, I suddenly realise that its tea-time, or supper time, or even tomorrow, and I must have fallen asleep shortly after the program started, and I don't remember any of it...

....I don't even know why I switched the Television on in the first place.....

Its all so very uninteresting!

the only thing left i watch on tv is news and weather.

That irritates the hell out of me when my wife does it. She'll settle down to a film that I don't want to watch, a chick flick or something, I sit and watch the rubbish with her and she'll fall asleep three quarters of the way through......why oh why did I just waste an hour of my life watching some garbage that I didn't like........To make matters worse, when they repeat the damn film, she'll say "I don't remember what happened in that film, lets watch it" and the whole flippin cycle starts again. ........I suppose I could spend more time in the pub.

ooooh yes...i forgot the mumbling....no diction classes in acting school these days....the rain in spain......maybe it's done on purpose so you'll be forced to watch the rerun to find out what was said

I followed Paul's link to see just how bad the mumbling was, and I found the BBC's explination;

There is no problem. It's just a VERY few complainers (probably some old people who can't hear anyway).

BBC Ripper Street comment.

A spokesman for the BBC said: 'We do our best to avoid mumbling and background noise because it’s important to ensure the audience can enjoy our drama to the full.'

It is also important to point out that we have had less than 8 complaints out of 5.1 million viewers which puts this issue into context.

See! Just a few grumpy people.



But let me point out to the BBC that "5.1 million viewers" really is a small number of viewers.

Perhaps it could have had more viewers had the dialog been a bit better?

Heck, the first showing may have had twice as many viewers. But 5 million of them give up without bothering to complain.



Well, as a grumpy old person, I agree with all of you - the dialog/diction is so bad that I wouldn't continue to watch it, even back when I did watch TV.

And that's sad, because it looked (on YouTube) like something that I would have liked otherwise.



Watching very closely as they speak, I was reminded of some actor a long time ago who used to clench his teeth as he spoke. Same effect, garbled mumbling.



Over all I find TV rather pointless. It's mostly remakes of popular TV going back 40 or 50 years.



In some of the pictures of my flight sim setup you'll see a desktop fan. That's to drown out my wife's TV when she turns it up too much.

That's actually a win-win situation for me.

The fan creates a faint rumbling vibration that gets passed through to the yoke as I fly.

Take my word for it, it was bad.

...perhaps it's an age thing but I don't think it's entirely down to that. Ripper Street started OK but it got worse as the series went on. I think I read somewhere that it was an attempt at realism.

I sort of sympathise OldAirmail, there is certainly a load of rubbish being broadcast but there is some good drama out there, if you can find it.

I don't really fancy paying for anything broadcast on Television...so "SKY", etc, is totally out of the question!.... ...!
