Maybe I should rephrase that as holding hands.

I've been rummaging round in my addled brain trying to remember some of the slower stuff we played for people to "slow dance" to. Although we could play all types of music we found from experience that slowing the tempo too early in the evening was the quickest way to empty the dance floor. Most males at the time had to be at least half-cut before venturing onto the floor.

We usually finished the evening with a marathon rock & roll session lasting anything up to half an hour. By the time that was finished everyone was worn out including me. Then we just had time to squeeze in the "last waltz" for anyone romantically inclined before we packed up the gear & headed for home.

One song everyone liked was our version of Gershwin's Summertime. This was also my own favourite. After Engelbert Humperdinck's "The Last Waltz" became a huge hit in 1967 we usually finished up with that.
