Sorry. this makes me feel bad & maybe I should have kept my big trap shut. I will in future. No sense in spoiling it for everyone else too.

I first suspected something (pun intended) when the last live concert featuring George Harrison was broadcast here. This was comparatively recently, just before he passed away. I noticed he was playing an acoustic guitar & Clapton was in the band.

PS. Another piece of useless information you might or might not know. Harrison & Clapton had a very strange relationship. They were always close friends even though Clapton stole Harrison's wife. She was the former actress Patti Boyd who supposedly inspired "Something". Eric Clapton also wrote "Layla" specially for her while she was still married to George. She left George & they were eventually married but the guys remained friends.

Also I saw a performance, probably the same you refer to and It never crossed my mind that Eric also recorded it with the Beatles. I just thought he was making a appearance.
So I guess it is safe to say there was and is a fifth Beatle!

And please keep posting these little pieces of trivia!!!

Being a musician myself I always realised that things aren't always what they seem. I could tell you a few stories that would destroy the faith of the most ardent fans of most of the 60s groups. A lot of the stuff on the records isn't the guys in the group at all. It wasn't that they couldn't play their instruments, far from it, but studio time was valuable in those days. Also would the reason the session man would get it right the first time, have anything to do with being sober? LOL!!

Actually, playing on stage & in a recording studio are very different. At least, they were in those days. I know 2 or 3 musicians who were on most of the 60s hits. Don't know if you heard of Big Jim Sullivan (lead guitar & sitar) & Herbie Flowers (bass)? They both live locally & still jam in the local bars & clubs. Herbie has a regular stint at the Shoreham Airport restaurant. I keep meaning to go & see what he's up to. Clem Cattini, original drummer with Johnny Kidd & the Pirates (Shakin' All Over) & later with the Tornados (on Telstar) eventually became a session drummer. He played on most of the hits by the Kinks & other well known groups. These were often one-off records by session musicans & the actual group was formed with completely different personnel only if it became a hit.

PS. I'm not sure Eric Clapton's part on those Beatles records was deliberately kept from the fans. He was under contract to a different label so they couldn't use his name. Lots of that sort of thing used to go on. They did credit other guest musicians like Billy Preston on "Get Back" & various others.

It's easy for me or anyone else to criticise now. All this started 40 years ago & was very exciting at the time. I feel privileged to have been there & I'm quite certain nothing like it will ever happen again. If it does I won't be around to see it. There is no doubt in my mind that the Beatles changed the face of popular music for ever. They were refreshingly different to anything that had gone before.

I have also read with interest some fo the other stuff you guys have been writing about bands that get other people to do stuff for them, and whilst i can see that this will sadden most of the ardent fans of a band (i'm a huge Dire Straits fan and would hate to find out about particular things like this that they have done, but i'm sure they have) i can see why bands do this, i mean in my job i get other people to do stuff for me that i can't be bothered doing, and i'm sure that most people on this forum do too (or am i just particularly lazy  :D) so i suppose it's just one of those things in life.

Why does everyone here think it's a sin for another artist to sit in with a band?  I was thrilled to find out Duane Allman played on Layla.  I love reading the liner notes and seeing thing like Bruce Hornsby playing with Don Henley!  I mean, what if Jimmy Page and Eddy Van Halen were to form a group.  People would be all over that.  I know I would rush out to buy it, just to hear it.  It's just like getting two for the price of one.

Don't get me wrong. There's no reason at all for a band not to feature guest artists on a recording or at a concert. This has been happening from the very start of the recording industry. What I find disappointing is when this is hidden from the fans, either deliberately or otherwise. You can't imagine my disappointment when I discovered that the fine style of guitar playing I always credited to George Harrison was in fact never played by him at all.

James. I am also a big fan of Dire Straits. Eric Clapton has also played on stage with them (rhythm guitar) & is possibly featured on some of their recordings. The line-up has also changed over the years. I have seen them live & I can guarantee they sound just as good if not better than on their records. The last Dire Straits concert at Wembly Arena was the best concert I've ever been to or likely to see.

Hagar, i would have loved to have seen that final concert of the band, I did however see Mark Knopfler performing many of the Dire Straits best tracks, as well as some of his solo stuff from his Sailing to Philadelphia tour, at Manchester Evening News arena a couple of years ago.

I know i t's not the same as seeing the actual band play, but i feel happy anyway that i was there to see the closest thing ever to Dire Straits live  :D
