Maybe the reason most Brits watch it. I think some of the other countries take it a tad more seriously.

You have to ask why though.
What does it honestly do to win? Maybe a slight interest for the winner for a few weeks in other countries. After that no-one remembers the winner.

It was an exception to the rule but I seem to remember a certain Swedish group that won when it was held in Brighton. Maybe that was a little before your time.
