While guitarist Keith Richards was touring the U.S with the Rolling Stones in the fall of 1966, his girlfriend, Linda
Keith, started hanging out at the Cafe Wha? in New York's Greenwich Village. Hendrix was playing there at the
time with John Hammond and Randy California. Linda Keith was taken by Jimi's act and, perhaps perceiving his
potential, persuaded the former bassist for the Animals, Chas Chandler, to come by the club one night. Chandler,
by then a band manager, took Jimi back to England and set him up with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch
Mitchell and carefully guided the Experience through the recording sessions that resulted in the first Hendrix album,
'Are You Experienced?'.

Noel Redding was originally a guitarist. His first encounter with a bass guitar was when auditioning for Hendrix.
Mitch Mitchell's audition went down to the wire. He was finally chosen with a toss of a coin.

'Are You Experienced' was released in the US shortly after Hendrix' debut performance at the Monterey Pop Festival.
The US version sported a different cover, and included 3 singles left off of the UK version (that was the UK practice
at the time), Purple Haze being one of them.

PBS recently aired a 2 hr American Masters doc about Hendrix, which included an interview with Linda Keith.

Some points to ponder:
It takes a significantly higher level of achievement than platinum-selling albums to be considered "Genius".
To call yourself "genius" based solely on the monetary value of your product may be a severe over-inflation or an over-indulged imagination: Delusions of Grandeur.

Roy Orbison is infinitely more talented than this clown. I find it humorous that someone of his stature still finds it necessary to give credit to himself. One may say, "Congratulations, ass hat", but I feel that far too polite and classy a statement for a man of his caliber.

Multi-platinum artist: the music business equivalent of a used car salesman, or even shade-tree mechanic.
His brand of music is designed to be ignored by a bunch of teenage girls at a slumber party while they talk about boys, or worse yet, something to suffer through in your car while waiting for the next traffic report.

The real artists aren't being discovered anymore, because it's too noisy. The wrong people are getting all the attention because they make racket. For example: Justin Beber.
Music by people like Bob Seger, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, John Fogerty, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Ben E. King, Stevie Wonder, Ronnie Van Zant, The Moody Blues, The Beatles, Mick Jagger, Eric Burdon, and so forth will be known "by heart" for years to come because will always be relevant. I sincerely doubt Kanye, Rihanna, or T-Pain will have anything to offer someone after 20 years. As it is, and it may be the age speaking, none of these turkeys have anything to offer me now. How do they plan to find themselves on the classic station in 2035?

Final point, and perhaps the most thought-provoking:
Buddy, if it were truly genius, would it really be necessary to try to convince anybody?
