Remember this one?

ABC's Wide World of Sports

Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport... the thrill of victory... and the agony of defeat... the human drama of athletic competition... This is ABC's Wide World of Sports!

And that poor guy on the ski jump is Vinko Bogataj.

Bogataj was competing as a Yugoslavian entrant at the Ski-flying World Championships in Oberstdorf, West Germany (now Germany) on March 21, 1970. A light snow had begun falling at the start of the event, and by the time Bogataj was ready for his third jump, the snow had become quite heavy. Midway down the ramp for that jump, Bogataj realized that the conditions had made the ramp too fast. He attempted to lower his center of gravity and stop his jump, but instead lost his balance completely and rocketed out of control off the end of the ramp, tumbling and flipping wildly, and crashing through a light retaining fence near a crowd of stunned spectators before coming to a halt. Despite the ferocity of the crash, Bogataj suffered only a mild concussion ...

It is likely that Vinko Bogataj's crash would have remained obscure had a film crew from Wide World of Sports not been on hand to record the event ...

Throughout the show's long history, various images were used for the other parts of the narration, including for "The thrill of victory...", which directly preceded the above phrase and was often accompanied by images of the celebrating team at the most recent Super Bowl or World Cup. But for those many years after that point, the "agony of defeat" was always illustrated by Bogataj's failed jump. (Later on, other clips were added to the "agony of defeat", but Bogataj's crash was always featured and always the first played.) ...
"Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!" - Sen. John Blutarsky

You know, this used to be a helluva good country. I don't understand what's gone wrong with it. - George Hanson, 1969

A bad day at golf is better than a good day at work.

Absolutely Ozzy.
I have the whole original series on DVD and although I also have the feature film it is a poor substitute.

Some good ones here, but here's two more masterpieces... Both 60s cartoon themes (during Hanna-Barbera's golden age)and both composed by the brilliant Hoyt Curtin.

Johnny Quest ... love the dissonant guitar chord in the middle!

The Jetsons... love the jazz trumpet solo for the "daughter Judy" part! And man, the strings certainly earned their pay on that session! Crazy!

Both part of my manic, cane-sugar-fueled childhood!

Whoa there, how could we forget the TV series Lone Ranger theme? The William Tell overture, composed around 1829 by Gioachino Rossini (1792–1868). Obviously not composed for the TV show, but a good pick nonetheless, just perfect for the Masked Man swooping down there yelling "Hi Yo Silver."
