Rules of shotgun:
Driver can still deny the shotgun, or fire the shotgun passenger if they don't perform their duties If the driver says 'reload', the first person to shout 'shotgun' wins.
Maybe the Captain doesn't know the full technicalities 8-)

Interesting where the term "riding shotgun" came from. It comes from the wonderful period in American history when stagecoach and mail drivers needed to guard the passengers and valuables from stage-robbers and aggressive indians. The guy next to the driver carried a firearm, frequently a shotgun.
