I reckon if you were trapped in a location with little chance of escape, you would eat anything that came to hand, including spiders and beetles.
The process has since been perfected to include tasty varieties, roasted, fried, etc, with various coatings.

The Death Watch Beetle dipped in batter, and deep-fried, is particularly popular at parties... ;)...!

Very crunchy...and slowly appearing on Supermarket shelves* :D...!
