There's also -

Climax, North Carolina
Horneytown, North Carolina

Near Ashland, Virginia I drove by a road sign that made me do a turn around and double take - "Licking Hole Road" - No camera with me back in the 1980's....darn it.

You missed out Virginville. :P http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Ball,_Lancaster_County,_Pennsylvania

There's lots of odd place names in this part of the world. In my home county of Sussex we have the villages of Cocking and Upper & Lower Dicker. Littlehampton often causes a giggle for some reason. A well-known local landmark was the Balls Hut pub near Arundel which I think has disappeared now. Then there's the holiday resort of Sandy Balls in the New Forest. One of my favourites is the village of Pratts Bottom near Biggin Hill in Kent.

I need to find the Town of Virginville!!  [smiley=evil.gif]

I would like to know how they decided the names of some of these towns.  Were they in a drunken stupper at the time and laughing saying people will love this name!!  ;D

There is also the state of Virginia. ;)

I find the history of place names fascinating. Some of these are lost in time & nobody really knows for certain how they originated. There's a lot of towns & villages around here with the suffix ING. For example, Worthing, Goring, Lancing & of course Cocking. This dates back to Anglo-Saxon times. Ingas (or inges) was an old English word meaning relatives or dependants. According to one account the village of Cocking is named after Cocca, a Saxon warlord who thought that this was a good place to put down roots. There's an entry in the Domesday Book for Cochinges or the settlement of the Coch or Cocca family. This became Cocking over the years. Here endeth your history lesson for today. ;)

Since you're chiding town names...

Many of the native names yet remain in New Hampshire although the government has denied the existance of any native progeny over the past few centuries.
The main stream I cross over about a mile from here was named the Tioga until some years ago when the town of Belmont got its name stuck in front of the word river. The township and lake named Winnisquam means "there are salmon around here." The largest natural lake to be contained within the borders one U.S. state, the name "Winnipesaukee" doesn't directly refer to the lake. It is closer to the more encompassing term for all of this major lake area, The Lakes Region, since it would more specifically translate as "the land around the lake."

Unique for names originating from Europe, hailing itself as "The Only Henniker on Earth," the southwest-central town of New Hampshire was named for Sir John Henniker, 2nd Baronet;
Member of Parliament for Sudbury
Member of Parliament for Dover
Peerage of Ireland: Baron Henniker
Baronetage of Great Britain: Baronet (of Worlingsworth Hall)
