They are indeed neater than some I've seen on my travels in the US. Unfortunately this was the best photo I could find.

Its a funny old do, but whenever I see a Photograph of an American City/Town, the streets are strewn with telegraph, etc, poles, and overhead cables of all sorts...

Most of that sort of "Wirery" seems to be buried underground, and out of sight, in Britain... ...!

We had our old 3-wire cables underground, sometimes detoured around huge boulders, but the power company required the new 4-wire cables be strung through the tree limbs rather than tree roots, except for the short distance from the meter to the home (the part they're not responsible for); they wanted easier access in an emergency -- falling tree, drunk pole rammer, earthquake, etc. -- so that they could just trample the charred ashes of hitherto obstacles.

Overhead Cables certainly makes maintenance and replacement in emergency situations (Californian Earthquakes!.......), etc...quicker, but it does seem to leave them exposed to the ravages of Weather, Snow and Ice...examples; rain, followed by icy conditions in Canada.... ...!

Fortunately, in stable old England, we don't experience too many of those extreme Weather/Earth Movement problems...so our tidy Island is mostly devoid of these unsightly overhead wiring arrangements... ...!

Most of the Maintenance Engineers burrow underground to fix electric/telephone problems... ...!

Our Horizon is mostly decorated with Trees, and Flowers.....
...and Sheep...

Well, to the trained eye it wouldn't be as hard. Whenever my friend Anurag (On-a-rog) comes back from a trip to India, all he does is talk about how much he hates it. He says you have to put up signs telling people not to pee on public buildings.
