Sheep...

A shepherd is out with his sheep and his sheep-dog... Later, he says to his sheep-dog,

"You look after these sheep while I go and pick up the mother-in-law. Tell ya' what, you count these sheep while I'm gone and tell me how many there are when I get back."

The sheep-dog complies and the shepherd sets off. When he gets back, he asks his dog,

"Alright how many were there, then?", to which the sheep-dog replied,

"There's a 140 of 'em." The shepherd then said,

"What? That can't be right, cause when I went to the market this morning to get 'em the seller told me there was 138 of 'em!"

The sheep-dog then said, " Yeah, there are, but I rounded 'em up for you!"

;D

surely the dog should say 140, and the sheperd 138......then the joke might actually make sense  ;)

You cannot round 140 up to make 138. Either there are 138 sheep and the seller rounded it up to 140 or the dog is stupid (which, to be fair is far more likely).

Read it carefully and note the punctuation... it DOES make sense.  :)

I doubt that even our punctuation prince Paul could notice something there. Maybe to do with the "'em"

Still, the joke would be funny if it was the other way round and more people would get it.

It only takes a little re- arrangement to show that it works

What it means is that the seller rounded the figure of 138 to 140. But the sheep dog rounded them up (he chased them into a bunch - another way of saying that is rounding them up) and he makes 138. It's all on the words rounding up.

By this rendition, the dog rounded them down; mathmatically, 138 would be rounded to 140. The association of the dog herding (rounding up) the sheep isn't refuted but, I suppose, by reversing it, one could say the dog rounded off. Still, not mathmatically correct. If he ever realizes his goof, he may feel a bit sheepish. :P
