I studied Japanese for a couple of years (demo ima watashi wa sukoshi Nihongo o wakarimasu!) and the guy saying 18, 19... ten-ten instead of 20 is perfectly logical.

1 Ichi
2 Ni
3 San
4 Shi (or Yon)
5 Go
6 Rokku
7 Shichi
8 Hachi
9 Kyu
10 Juu
20 Nijuu ("two-ten")
30 Sanjuu ("three-ten")

But admittedly ten-ten-ten for 30 was pushing it a bit, and ten-ten-ten-ten-ten-ten-ten-ten-ten-ten for 100 was ridiculous!

We had a lot of fun in our small class, reading Japanese to each other and making a complete mess of it ;D  At least the sensei didn't whack us with a big stick if we got it wrong!

Ask one of our French members what soixante-treize or quatre-vingt directly translate into English as. I think I'll take a four-twenty-twelve ??? ... oops, sorry, a ninety-two mile trip to ponder this. ::)
