No Geese Prequel
Posted: Wed Aug 30, 2006 12:57 amThe "No Geese" sign seems akin to an account from so long ago, I have no idea when; it may be the shocking reason for the sign-posting mania, however. 
Adjoining a small rural museum in Vermont was a farmer's cow pasture (don't confuse this with 'pastor' -- we're speaking of bovine creatures in a grass field, not 'spiritual' sheep). One day some tourists (we'll be nice and not mention from where beyond the New England borders they came) parked in the area just in front of the pasture fence. They'd brought their dog along with them and, as soon as they'd opened their vehicle's door, it made a barking dash toward the cows in the field.
Within a moment, the barks abruptly ended with a whining yelp, then silence. The dog had been rendered unconscious by the electric fence it had just rammed itself into.
The farmer had seen the incident and drove his tractor the short distance to see if the peoples' dog was going to be OK. He didn't get a chance to say a word but was, immediately, verbally accosted by the family, "You could at least have put up a warning sign about that fence!"
"Well," the old Vermonter slowly replied, "I would 'ave if I'd known your dog could read."
