It turns out that one J. E. Johnson, during a seconding to the US,was posted to a USAF base in on of the states of the Southern belt.   There. among his other duties, he was in charge of taking requests for flyovers from the locals.

He was asked one particular June to schedule a flypast for their celebrations early in July.  When Mr. Johnson, he of Spitfire fame, asked, in his newly acquired southern drawl, the reason for the celebrations, the good ol' boy roared indignantly, "Of course to celebrate the independence from the Go**amn British!"

Mr. Johnson, was a gentleman, taking time out to answer personally a few letters from a then 15-year old in a small Caribbean that had just devoured "Wing Leader"...

One would presume that most SimV members would recognize that Johnnie Johnson - the RAF's (confirmed) top scorer of WW2 - is a Brit, and having an American ...

oh well,  I guess my brand of humor is a wee bit dry...

The ending was the J E Johnson actually replied to a couple of letters I sent him back when he was a recently retired Air Vice Marshal ...  and I wish I still had them!!
